Hey all,

I've recently got an iPhone 5 - it's awesome - however, something happened this weekend that could have made me squeeze out a little tear :p

I unfortunately gave my friend the opportunity to take a little look at my new phone, and he swiftly - accidentally - dropped it on the floor :p

It's got a few scratches around the side - but it works and I was expecting it to get damaged at some point anyway...

I don't like putting cases on my phones - so I wonder if insurance is the way to go. A lot of people asked me if I have insurance on it, and when I said no they were very surprised - is it so surprising not to insure your phone?

So my question is - do you insure your phone?

Over the last couple of years of owning an iPhone - I've had one fail its speaker on me, two fail its home button on me and my 4S this year was destoryed in the great black current spillage of twenty-twelve :p All of these could be protected with insurance I assume - so I'm seriously considering it. Are there any cons (apart from the price of course :p)?

Thanks,

Marky

No, I just don't drop it or leave it anywhere.

Maybe I will one day and regret it, but I don't like insurance unless I really need it such as life, contents and car insurance.

Warranties and the like are often not worth the paper they are written on.

Nope, far too pricey for me on top of the phones cost. I just take care of it, never had one fail on me either.

I've had a couple of expensive phones that i've owned for a few years now without insurance.

Honestly, I think it depends how wreckless you are, however accidents happen and sometimes out of the blue, personally because i know that its worth so much i ensure that i take good care of it, don't advertise it unnecessarily, don't put in same pocket as keys etc etc.

If i'd paid the £10 a month (or however much it is) i probably could have bought another brand new phone should it get dropped/ stolen. Its the risk you take, but there's all sorts of ways of looking at it.

Another thing to bare in mind that people often forget / don't realise that sometimes banks can offer free phone insurance and some house insurance policies cover mobile handsets too (there's all sorts of small print to read into though).

Edit: When my network provider offered me insurance, reading a little deeper into the small print i noticed that often they replace with a refurbished phone rather than a new handset, probably varies though.

It's covered automatically by my house contents policy. I just tick the box marked "cover up to £x for anything I carry with me" and it's covered. The increase in premium is something like £45, and it covers things like all my camera gear, my laptop etc. As long as no single item is more than £1000 in value, it's all included. Surely I can't be the only one?

I don't take the rip off insurance they try to sell you in store when you get a phone but rather just have it covered by my bank account - or as others do stick it on your home contents.

This is what my friend does to cover his Macbook pro, phone and a few other things, it has paid for for him atleast has his broken his MBP twice already.

Me personally I don't tend to keep a phone for longer then 1 year, and at the end I either sell it of (if its in good nick) or just recycle it, adding the monthly cost insurance would throw me into the negative instead of just breaking even with every new phone I get.

Good god yes.
Just pay ~£10 a month on your bank account and get several insurances, breakdown covet etc. or add it to your home insurance.

Nope, mine is covered under my home insurance. The only thing these phone specific ones do is provide a speedier service but you pay through the nose for it and it's not worth it imo.

So it's insured. Yet you said nope
He didn't specify phone specific ones.
