Just thought I'd make a thread as my brother wants to build a PC. He has a budget of around £300 and will be using it for editing videos and also some gaming aside. He will eventually upgrade components as he does not want a graphics card at this moment either as this will be purchased at a later date.He will need W7 and already has a monitor. I know this is quite a small budget but I know guys on this forum will think of something :D

Cheers all.

@ RJC... I'm not sure if the Celery chip is a good idea as the OP will be adding a GPU later (for gaming). I personally wouldn't go below an i3 or maybe an FX-4100.

I think a £300 budget including Windows 7 is a bit optimistic to be honest.

This is an AMD alternative to the other builds mentioned in this thread which includes the cost of Windows 7:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-02050) £83.99
1 x AMD Bulldozer FX-4 Quad Core 4100 Black Edition 3.60Ghz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £77.99
1 x XFX Pro 550W Core Edition '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £56.99
1 x Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 AMD 760G (Socket AM3+) DDR3 MicroATX Motherboard ** FREE NEXUIZ GAME ** £51.98
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (ST500DM002) £45.98
1 x BitFenix Merc Alpha Gaming Case - Black £27.98
1 x Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (PV38G160C9K) £23.99
1 x Samsung SH-S222BB/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £14.99
Total : £397.99 (includes shipping : £11.75).

Thats £100 over budget. So no it does not include windows in the budget...

I think Llano is definitely a good idea as the quad core should make a difference over the i3 when video editing.
The above builds look fine, but you're all spending too much on a PSU imo. OCUK has a few PSUs for under £35 from brands like Coolermaster, OCZ and Xigmatek. Surely these would suit for a budget build.

Kristmace do you know anything about PC's?

First of all PSU is the most important part so you need a quality piece especially if hes adding a GPU which for all we know could be a 7850 or 7770 later on.

And Llano does not beat an i3 in any way for his purpose. The dual cores on the i3 alone would be better than the Llano chip for video editing because of its architecture but it also has Hyperthreading which makes it more than adequate/.

Guessing Intel is the better option? Not 100% sure with this budget though. Although as i said making space for upgrading needs to be taking into consideration.

Can he upgrade to £450 including OS? Its a tall order I know but then your looking at something like:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i3-3220 3.30GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £99.95
1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-02050) £83.99
1 x Asus P8Z77-V LX Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £79.99
1 x BeQuiet Pure Power L8 430W '80 Plus Bronze' Modular Power Supply - With 120mm Silent Wing Fan Built in £54.98
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (ST500DM002) £45.98
1 x BitFenix Merc Alpha Gaming Case - Black £27.98
1 x Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (PV38G160C9K) £23.99
1 x Samsung SH-S222BB/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £14.99
Total : £445.96 (includes shipping : £11.75).

Currently the PSU is out of stock however you can always ask OcUK when it will be back in stock. Its made by Seasonic so it is of good quality.

Also any idea of what sort of GPU he will be putting with the system?

I said the price includes Windows 7, i didn't say it's within the OP's budget (i already mentioned £300 is a bit optimistic including win 7 ;)).

Keep in mind the OP's friend will be adding a GPU later on for gaming, i wouldn't skimp too much .

A Pentium G8xx would be better than gettign an FX4100 imo.

Even for games that benefit from having more threads/cores? I'm pretty sure the G8xx series are just 2 core/2 threads... I'd say the fx-4100 is not that far behind an i3 when it comes to gaming (maybe on par or even ahead with certain games ). It's also cheaper to buy ;).
