£300 Build?

Kristmace do you know anything about PC's?

First of all PSU is the most important part so you need a quality piece especially if hes adding a GPU which for all we know could be a 7850 or 7770 later on.

And Llano does not beat an i3 in any way for his purpose. The dual cores on the i3 alone would be better than the Llano chip for video editing because of its architecture but it also has Hyperthreading which makes it more than adequate/.

There's no point speccing a system thats 30-40% over budget though. The OCZ PSU that OCUK has for £29.99 is perfectly adequate and quite capable of powering a 7850.
Llano is inferior to i3, I'm quite aware of that but look at the budget. If you can save £20-30 by going Llano then that has to be considered. Benchmarks on Anandtech for Llano for video tasks aren't streets behind an i3 either.

Why would you want to power a near £200 GPU with a £30 PSU. You wouldn't do it. Common sense.

Sneaze can you take a look at my previous spec and ask your friend if he can afford it? It offers a decent upgrade path and reliability.

But then for £400 why on earth would you go AMD?

Because it still works out slightly cheaper than an Intel rig (this is a tight budget rig were talking about here). I'm pretty sure the FX-4100 is still comparable (or almost) with an i3 when it comes to gaming etc..

Well, 7850 is more like £130 and personally, If I was on such a tight budget, I'd be fine with that. 7850 is far less power hungry than 5000 and 6000 cards.

May be so but Intel has a much greater upgrade path if going with a i3/Pentium.

I always take those results with a pinch of salt, but i get the idea. Are there actually any i3 & fx-4100 comparisons? I'm still looking.

Over budget.
But have included a Z77 mobo, though some of the accessories will be missing. As to what , you wont know until you get it. But it does offer your brother the ability to upgrade to an i5 at a later date.
Hav`nt included a dvd drive either, you can always add one if need be.

Or slightly cheaper option, another "B" grade board, but not much of an upgrade path. But does include a dvd/rw.

I mean out of the box this system would outperform all mentioned above in gaming, editing I heard that AMD isnt too bad in that department. But upgrade route is far weaker than that of intel. You could save 50 quid on getting cheaper FM2 motherboard, but I really dont understand what is going on with FM2 socket atm... I just know that this mobo was in ocUK that tested 5800K and it was very good.

I mean this AMD isnt actually that bad compared to i3 which was mentioned above

They are easy to spot, as soon as you see someone boasting that they have Windows 7 Ultimate, its either a spastic or a pirate... or both.

Or someone who might make use of the extra networking features, or someone who can get a copy cheap because they are a student ;)
