Would you join a Volunteer Civilian Postal Corps?

The "I think my postman is dead" thread gave me an idea for something. A volunteer auxiliary service made up of civilians who could take on some of the work load from professional postal personnel.

Personally I would volunteer for such a thing because I have always quite wanted to be a postman and honestly sorting and delivering post looks like it would be a fun hobby. It would also help people. You would get a uniform and badge and everything.

Would you join?

It might be a good idea. Probably a better, more reliable service than the current lot offer :)

(Nope: Really bad idea)

Yes it would be unpaid volunteer work. Like a volunteer fire man, but for the Post Office.
So instead of volunteering for an emergency service (noble) you suggest perhaps volunteering for a for profit (pffflol) business?

Step back two paces. Stop. Think about what you asked. Realise. Lower head and exit thread.

You should become a postman. If they won't take you because you are a gun loving maniac, you could always just write to people and post it yourself?

/thread.

No. Even more post would be stolen than already is.

edit: Separate sentiments. No, I wouldn't join. No to the general concept on the grounds of postal theft

No, kwerk is right. Only with a brave force of elite volunteers could the postmen delivery letter post when it has been snowing.

Actually around here Meals on Wheels requests extra volunteers who can deliver in the snow when it gets bad. I have a 4x4 with snow tyres and chains if need be so I often volunteer.

Now imagine if somebody had mail ordered some cat medicine or something and it wasn't able to get through because of inclement weather and as a result their cat was to die? It's literally life or death.
