I am after a speaker/audio solution that can connect to my home network and stream from my Synology nas. Does this exist? Think the SYnology box has squeezebox if that helps?

Found plenty that stream from my connected iphone/ipad

After something like a a logitech UE or bose sounddock typ affair that could stream from the nas. Maybe with the ability to use my iphone/ipad as a remote and music interface.

Failing that I will just have to go with a normal airplay speaker thingy and download to iphone first.

@SoundsGood I wish I ahd the know ho and patience mate. Not my thing I'm afraid

Why are we trying to reinvent the wheel here? Surely a Squeezebox Radio or something from Sonos; either one of their all-in-one speakers or a Connect with some active speakers is a perfect solution. Or is that just too simple?

Agreed, the SB radio is perfect for this. Or an SB Touch into some active speakers for a bigger sound depending on budget.

Yeah I'm after an all in one type affair. Will a squeezebox radio connect to my nas? My nas has Logitech media server taht specifically says it will stream to a squeezebox.

Can anyone recommend a specific one? And how does one do the music selections? via iphone/ipad?

Yeah, as long as your NAS runs SBS which it sounds like it does then the SB Radio will detect it and load your library and play whatever you want.

There is only one Squeezebox Radio. Can pick it up for about £115

You can control it on the device itself or it comes with a small remote (very basic). If you own a i device or an Android phone then its highly recommended to buy either iPeng (Apple) or SqueezeCommander (Android) as a method of controlling it :)

Cool cheers mate. Is there anything a touch more substantial speaker wise though. Saw an old logitech boombox which looked tidy but can't see a new equivalent.

The Logitech UE Air Speaker looks the business. Would that stream from logitech media server on my nas?

Not used Squeezebox but if you tried Sonos you'd only need to buy the Play 3 speaker (or Play 5 if you wanted something bigger) and you're good to go.

If you wanted the speaker to run wireless you'd need to buy the bridge as they require at least one device physically connected to a network.

You're right, the Radio is only a little small thing, Great for a kitchen (and it does have a surprisingly big sound) although if you want loud something bigger would be best.

I presume you want wireless so with Sonos you'll need a bridge and speaker. So about £300 (or more if you want the bigger Play 5)

Do you have anything at the moment that you use for music? If you do then you could just buy an SB Touch and connect it to that. Or as said earlier just pick up some decent active speakers :)

Yes, I'm using it to access Internet radio and my NAS, as an out of the box experience I can't fault it besides the cost.

You only need the bridge if you can't connect the Play 3 speaker directly to your network. One Sonos device must be physically wired into your network but the rest will all be wireless, so if you put the Play 3 speaker into your network you can then start adding more play speakers without any wires at your convenience or hook up to an existing hifi using Connect etc.

Definitely Sonos - it's expensive because it's the best. Will take you all of 10 minutes to set it up once you've shared out your music folder.

Absolutely no problems with streaming from NAS or Internet radio. If wireless coverage not good in your property due to thick walls or similar just buy Sonos bridges to extend the mesh network.

For best performance, connect your NAS directly to a Sonos bridge and use the Sonos network to link to your home LAN.

Right so if I understand, and thank you for your patience I need a sonos bridge p[lugged in then I can go nuts with speakers? I ideally want a wireless streamer as an all in one though if possible?

The Philips NP3700/12 Streamium Network Music Streamer Player caught my eye and something like this would be ideal. However the philips only has a 10w max and has mixed reviews. Can be had for £69 though, maybe worth a punt?

Yes more or less, you just need 1 Sonos device physically connected to your network and the rest are wireless. So what most people do is they buy the 'cheap' bridge and a speaker but if you wanted the speaker in the same room as your router you would not need the bridge (or if you had a hifi you'd get connect or if you wanted it to act like a hifi you'd get the amp).

I've never used the Philips so can't make an informed comment on how good it is but if I were choosing between the two I'd reason that the Philips is a cheaper and easier way to get just one room hooked up, the Sonos system is better if I want to do multiple rooms and control them centrally or I need more flexible options (connect, amp etc).

There's less tangible benefits too, I'm pretty sure you'll see better support over the years with a Sonos system as it's their main product and pretty popular but as I've said repeatedly, it's bloody expensive.

I use Sonos stuff and love it. Only downside is that it a bit like crack and somewhat addictive. You start looking for rooms where you want to stream wireless music too just because you want more :)

Perhaps the postman might like to listen to Radio 2 in the porch whilst he is posting my letters. He might not but that's irrelevant :)
