Police in mid Wales have launched a search after a five-year-old girl went missing in Machynlleth.

April Jones was last seen playing on her bicycle with friends near her home at about 19:30 BST on Monday.

She was seen getting into a light coloured van which then drove off.

Dyfed-Powys Police say they are becoming increasingly concerned for her safety and are asking anyone with information about the incident to call them by dialling 101.

Up to 200 people had gathered at Machynlleth Leisure Centre by 23:00 BST preparing to join the search for the missing girl.

BBC Wales reporters in the town said a crowd of people had also gathered on its main street to look for April.

There were also reports of police activity on the estate in the town where she lives.

What's nearly as distressing as the disappearance itself is the apparent lack of supervision. Surely the parents of at least one of the children in the group should have been there to supervise them?

A 5 year old with friends NEAR her home?

Disgusting parent, i wouldn't have my family/children whatever out of my sight at that age.

Honestly what is a five year old doing playing outside. I have a five year daughter and wouldn't think of letting them outside the house on there own. They have no idea what the world is about and the evil people that are out there.

There is no reason a child of that age should be out of sight of the parents.

Thing is countless times i've seen kids even younger than that walking about, at one point during this year I saw two 6 year olds pushing a baby in a pram to the shops!. Two weeks ago 3 girls of 8 were in the town wearing pj's!

Usually the type of parents don't give a toss, then this happens. I can understand if the child got out or suddenly ran off behind their backs but to leave that child playing out of sight? :/

7.30??

Let me guess, they wanted the child out the house out of their way...

Not sure who's worse the van driver or the parents!

Waits for story " Van driver was a family member "

:( Hopefully they find her. If not then the Mccanns are out of business.

Harsh, but accurate (and made me laugh :D)

I do hope they find her, but I wouldn't let my little brother be out at that time of night alone, let alone my hypothetical children.

Sad though :(

Why isn't there some sort of law that holds parents in this type of cases to account. Yes the person that took the child should be found and dealt with to the highest level of the law (or pushed in front of a steam roller with broken legs). But parents that don't look after children make me sick. You have children you look after them otherwise don't have them the same way if you choose to have pets you have to look after them.

Just reminds me of how the McCann's left their children on there own in a different country and everyone feels bad for them. Yes they paid a horrible price but it could have been avoided by looking after thier children instead of going out for a meal on the **** with friends. Horrible horrible horrible ...

Looking on the map it looks like a small village where everyone would know each other, not the sort of place you'd worry about rampant pedos and kids can play unsupervised. Although 5 is too young to be unsupervised.

Doens't sound like it will turn out well though.

Saw this early this morning, hope she is found soon.

I know the media involvement can be an asset in these situations, but I can't help but feel you can feel the excitement inside the anchors as they get their teeth into another situation.

Perhaps I'm just too cycnical.

Horrible news though.

I haven't seen any coverage, I have just read the BBC article.

I just hope we don't end up with someones picture being plastered all over the TV only to find out they are innocent, remember Christopher Jefferies?
