Hi ALL,

As AVG have totally screwed up 2013 free on mine and many other people computers due to there identity protection causing a massive delay on start up i was wondering what else people used + what I could replace it with.

after installing AVG 2013 i have also noticed Chrome flicking like crazy on the Aero glass bar above the tabs. im assuming its Avg again causing this but it could be my upgrade to 306.23 nvidia drivers, but i doubt it.

so yeah AVG need to fix this and sharpish or im out, shame i have used it for years with no fuss till now.

what do people recommend?

Paul

What I do now is just keep Windows fully updated, set UAC to Maximum, then I run a monthly manual scan with Nod32 online scanner, it's free on their website.

If I have a file that I'd like to scan, I upload it to VirusTotal , free online multi-scanner.

PC runs quicker without AV.

I haven't had a virus since blaster in XP, that was the first 'major' virus that affected a lot of people

I didn't notice any performance loss when running MSE on Win7 on my laptop (2Ghz C2D, 2GB, 9400M).

Avoid Avast, it's become an adware engine with AV tacked on the side.

That's a bit harsh. The free version is still an excellent AV package and the length of time pop up's appear for can be changed. So my update notification only appears for 2 seconds and so on.

Ads are not that bad with it. Only time an ad will pop up is when your virus data base updates. In terms of virus protection and being free I dont think they is a better program out there.
Some of the features avast gives in the free version puts most paid software to shame. And the ads it shows is only based around its own products Like now its shows I can get 40% off the Internet security.
It dont show a single ad from other products.

Very true he being way over the top on the ads. He acting like it sticks ads in your face every 10 secs lol
You see an ads maybe once a day when it updates and its about its own software.

Nonsense! I use Avast atm and the ads are minimal.

Before that I was using Avira, whose ads are much more "in your face".

Look, you do know that free products don't pay for themselves, right? They have to be ad supported to stay free.

Although I'm sure you can't go wrong with MSE, if you don't fancy either Avast/Avira.
