I'm after a bit of advice for a friend who recently travelled on a National Express coach, plugged in to the 240v port with an authentic Apple charger, which then blew and stopped working, causing the screen on his iPhone 4S to go 'funny' and now the phone won't charge.

Where does he stand?

The phone is out of warranty :(

I imagine they'll probably get out of it by having some sort of use at your own risk clause in the ticket conditions.
Maybe worth dropping them an email just to see what they say though.

Is there a fuse in the charger? I was surprised that it didn't have some kind of fast blow fuse to save the phone!

How would a 24 - 240v inverter do so much damage though? And surely others would have had the same issue, so could it be the wiring on the individual socket?

I think it's going to be a struggle to convince NE either way :(

It could have just been an unfortunate coincidence and nothing to do with NE's sockets.

i'D be iNcredibly iRate at iPhone iNcineration, iNstigate iMmedate iNvestigation iN to iT.

Assuming that it's a genuine charger then the transformer in it will be at fault rather than the device. As it's fused (and the fuse didn't go) Apple have the fault with their charger rather than NE.
