Polycarbonate is generally more impact resistant than metal. Metal will deform, polycarbonate will flex but not shatter like offer plastic and is resistant to deformation.

I don't know of ANY dslr or lens with cheese like build quality, except maybe the Canon nifty fifty.

The 1.4 50mm is more unreliable than the nifty. The least reliable lens in the line up.

Yes, but isn't that to do with a component (AF motor), and not build quality/material.
