Spec me for the girlfriend, BMW 118d or ??

Stringy LOL. I know i read it back too...

What i mean is I drive down the streets and see everyones cars parked up. It goes a bit like this:
Car 1: Plain dull econobox from manufacturer 1
Car 2: Plain dull econobox from manufacturer 2
Car 3: Plain dull econobox from manufacturer 3
and repeat.

I was hoping to get someting a bit more aspirational. Perhaps you are right and i am just buying manufacturer number 4's econobox...

Yes SB injectors can be had at £200 for a set of genuine's, so what else are we looking at on a common rail diesel these days? Most likely a turbo in the next 10 years as well.

You're absolutely kidding yourself if you think a 118d is a better car than a ctdi civic - not that I'm saying this is something you should buy!

Sanchez - this is the best suggestion anyone has come up with so far. Im off to go look up what you get for your money on a golf.

Dind ding ding, we have a winner! ;) The 1 series was introduced so that people who couldn't afford a BMW, could afford a BMW. They've improved over time, but there are still loads of them out there.

So that's £300 for the DPF, £200 for the injectors (plus fitting), than how ever much for the DMF (guesstimate fo £300?) So you're looking at needing to save £800 on fuel over the ownership of the car when the derv fuel is 5-6p/L more expensive to start of with. And if she's only doing 5-10 mile work commute runs it's not going to warm up properly so it'll be getting same/worse fuel economy as the petrol equivilant.

What I see when I see a 118d..........Plain dull econobox

Exactly, all these cars are dull hatchbacks - if you're going to buy a dull hatchback buy one that offers the most a dull hatchback can.

The 1 is cramped, not great inside, extremely expensive for what it is, generally poorly specced compared to the competition and without a 6 or the 123d so average to drive that rwd does not matter. The mk6 whilst also expensive is a better all rounder

Oh and r.e the above, dmf will be a 1k fix with most cars

I do like the look of the golf, and the mpg figures are as good as the 1. Will look further.

Rod; I will be upgrading my car in 2014 to a cl500 so her car must be a smaller engined car. I too enjoy a decent powerful drive, but not all cars need to have a massive engine to make them worthwhile cars.

Diesel: 45mpg @ 1.35/L therefor 10k miles = 1350 (Tax = £30/pa)
Petrol: 35mpg @ 1.30/L therefor 10k miles = 1671 (Tax = £120/pa)
Saving per 10k miles is therefor £321. Add to that the lower tax cost....

This is for the 118d and 118i.

So you're saving absolute buttons over a year........btw I'm not suggesting there's anything wrong with buying a relatively small engined, normal car but you're going to do it then get one that's actually decent, the 116/118d are, imo only good for co car drivers

I've had 2 unrepairable punctures this year that wipe out your theoretical "saving" - whilst that's nothing to do with the car being petrol or diesel it'll maybe put a bit of perspective onto how big that saving really is or isn't

Add to that he fact that equivalent diesels are more expensive than petrols...

Don't believe me? Compare same age, same mileage, same spec petrol and diesel Mk6 golfs. It's why I got a 1.4 TSI 160 and not a 140 TDI (that and the fact I despised the driveability of the diesel coming from an RS Clio)

And how many miles will she be doing? How many of these will be short runs?

(so how exciting is our saturday night then? :D)

I would rather buy a Golf than 118d and that's despite being a huge BMW fan and owner. The 1 does not have the quality of the larger BMWs and offers little over the golf bar handling which you obviously don't care about if you only want a 118.

My Mrs is getting an average of 57mpg out of her mk6 Golf 2.0TDI, admittedly the tax is heavier at £100, but its a nicer car and better equipped (GT) than the equivalent 1 series. She loves the car.

And to achieve that tiny saving you need you need to drive a nasty slow dagdagdag diesel for an entire year. I thought you said you liked her? ;-)

And I can't believe some one would spend so much and only get a 1 series

Other than the 135i I wouldn't consider spending any money on a 1 series.

Certainly not based on the argument put forward by the OP.

All he's going to end up with is for his 10k is a dull car with a posh badge.

For the next ten years FFS!

TEN YEARS in a 118d of all things!

It seemed the logical choice really given that you wanted a more premium brand and solid build quality than perhaps your average Vauxhall. Whatever you decide on I hope you enjoy it. :)
