1080P as a monitor - terrible

You shouldn't need game mode on at all, people are wrong to recommend that,
if his gaming he would need game mode on because of the input lag. also he may get input lag in general use without game mode on

so people are not wrong to recommend that

i use my Samsung 46" 3d tv as my main screen and i need game mode on even in general use to stop the input lag.

Just scan is for Panasonic TVs

On the Samsung bring up the Menu then select Picture, Screen Adjustment, Picture Size and select Screen Fit. This will get rid of any overscan and text should look sharp.

Does you Windows Desktop fit or does it go off the screen edges?

Apologies. My Tv still has a noticeable amount of lag in gaming mode and pc mode was the only way to reduce it. I think samsung panels vary a bit too much so a fix on one tv may not work on another!

On my Samsung 8000 you have press the "Source" button - Select your PC input (which ever HDMI) - then "Tools" on the remote - the select Edit Name from the menu and scroll down to "PC" and press "OK"

Then it refreshes itself and look amazing!

Thanks guys, I really think that what I'm seeing is the limits of the screen and signal processing of a bottom of the range small screen.

The features that you describe, which I know are in bigger and more expensive Samsungs simply aren't in this model.

There is no overscan problem - the screen computer screen is displayed exactly the right size - fits perfectly.

All the text is there and some may be happy, but for me it looks unsharp and distorted and it gives me a headache as my eyes try to resolve the image.

I'm sure as a movie or game console picture you wouldn't notice and would probably say that it's a great picture. It's only when you connect up a PC and look at text that you can see the short-comings.

I did take it back to Argos. They insisted I try another, which I was happy to do though I did warn them that it would be coming back if it was the same and did they really want two open box products. But they insisted - I tried it and it is the same. I'm certain that I'm just seeing the limit of the cheap end TV.

I don't know what to do next though - I'm leaning towards a monitor with speakers because I fear that any small TV in my price range could have the same problems.

Cheers,

Nigel

Sorry you're not doing it right, just took a look at the 22" in our spare bedroom and happens to be the exact model you have! Checked and yes the feature is there.

Plug the computer into HDMI 1 (DVI) - Should be displayed next to the port. This is important as it is the input required to set as PC.

Once done, press Source, highlight the HDMI, press Tools, Choose Edit Name and then in the list presented scroll to and select PC. The screen will flicker and you will now have a nice clear PC picture. This setting actually enables the TV to output the correct PC colour format or something, which is unavailable in other modes apparently and as I said above was the only input to not have a noticeable amount of input lag as I play BF3 through my 46" and the lag was very noticeable in Movie, Gaming and standard mode. Only renaming to PC made it a nice experience.

As said, exact same TV so it is there.

Correct - I have a larger 5 series Samsung and it took a while to realise where the settings are - but it will work!

Thanks for that - yes I was going it wrong. I had selected HDMI on and then pressed Tools, rather than just highlighting and pressing tools.

Just confirmed this on my smaller 19" (1366x768) kitchen TV from the same range.

Unfortunately, I've taken the 22" back now so can't check whether it makes a difference without buying it again.

Cheers,

Nigel

op .. have you turned on cleartype ?

See post above.

(1) I don't have the TV any more

(2) The solution is that you have to use the undocumented method to change the format of the HDMI input to 'PC'. This will turn off all the overprocessing and set the pixel mapping to 1:1 rather than overscanning.

Unfortunately I only discovered this once I had returned the TV - there is nothing in the manual describing this - just have to rely on the informed forum people to tell you.

Cheers,

Nigel

i think its too late to put any info on this but just for clarification, those 22" TV/Monitors do not have the capacity to display FULL HD 1080. If connecting from a laptop as external output you have to lower the resolution to at least 720.

The spec lists the panel as 1920x1080.. so I'm not sure what you're getting at. Do you mean processing wise? That's what he was trying to turn off.
