Moving in with the missus for the first time

More seriously though, sack the car finance off and buy something cheaper, a run around, preferably something cheaper to insure too as £85 a month to insure it seems rather bloomin steep!

I'm only 24 thats been driving 10 months and she's 21 and been driving 3 years, it's the cheapest we've got for the car we have.

250 quid for food and 300 disposable per month? Christ, that kind of strict budgeting makes me feel positively guilty with the amount I blow on absolute crap each month. No wonder I barely save any money. :(

£250 isnt enough for food unless you are eating tesco value micro meals

you guys must be smoking crack...

1 weeks shop - £58 (for 2 people)

2 packs chicken fillet breasts, 1 pack lean mince steak - £10
steaks - £8
fish - £6
15 eggs - £2.50
fruit - £6
veg - £5
milk 6 pint - £2
salad bits - £5
cereal - £3
pasta - £3
rice - £3
oils and spices- £5

total
£58.50

On £250 a month you can eat healthy salads, pasta, chicken, mince, fish, steak and do a number of meals like omelets, chilli, pasta dishes, home made mince steak burgers etc

Buy a couple of cheap potato's and do home made steak and chips...

Hell, even on the £5 a week food challenge we did at uni, I still managed to eat reasonably healthy

My gf and I put a total of £200 a month in for food, toiletries, cleaning products etc, and we underspend every month without fail. Eating cheaply and healthily isn't hard in the slightest if you don't drink at home and cut out naughty things.

We thought the £250 food bill will include things like shampoo etc. Fuel, our car does about 370 miles/tank which costs £60 to fill. Work will be within 5-10 miles out. If that helps?

£250 INCLUDING toiletries and kitchen and home consumables?! Per month?

I have to agree that that seems a little low. Budget for £300 pm and anything you spend less than that can go into a savings pot or a treat for a meal out :)

Then again we don't drink at home, but we do eat large quantities of food (well I do :p) but eat clean (very clean). However excluding toiletries (she does her own) but including bleach/cleaning products etc... I guess £250 is doable depending on your dietary needs. :) It's still about £55 per week.

ours is more like £450 for 2 of us

I'm assuming here that your combined wage is significantly more than £1800 though...;)

Having gone from a student to a well paid job I can vouch for the fact the more disposable income you have the more expensive your food shop becomes for the "same essentials"...:p

Yeah it is combined from what I gather - for both of them. :)

Also I agree with the below:

£300 per month disposable income per month for two of you seems very low. You may find it uncomfortably low. Treats/days out add up very quickly.

I've also just noticed, you have nothing in the budget for any kind of "entertainment" allowance. Odd trips to the cinema, meals out etc. When your only running in the £200 - £300 a month of spare money they can really add up. I stuck £80 a month into my budget in an effort to try and cover that off which I would say is worth doing.

£300 isn't much though - a service on the car and you'll be done for the month. That means no disposable income at all - not even a pint after work on Friday.

This might be unpopular, but you are spending £3200 a year on a car (insurance/loan). Get rid, buy something cheap to get you around for a while, if work is 5/10 miles away you aren't doing loads of miles.

I think you need to look at "house stuff" you might also need initially - linen, kitchen utensils/cookware, crockery/cutlery, maybe the odd bit of furniture etc.

On the upside I think you might be over estimating utility bills - I can't remember exactly but I think mine are something like £80 a month.

ETA: The house is unfurnished, so you'll need everything - bed, bedside cabinets, sofas, coffee table at a minimum.

Yeah my last flat I rented I was spending £45 on gas and electricity combined per month.

I thought all those figures, including the combined wage were just his half! working part time? and why is the rent so low :O

me and my wife live on £2196 a month with 3 kids and paying full rent and all other bills plus many things on finance. we always seem to have spare money for things we want so with your wage for just 2 adults you have more than enought
