The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Apparently the 50L Bokeh isn't great either, I hear the Sigma 1.4 renders better.

yea that is what i heard too mate. best to for the sigma or the 50 1.4

Are you actually saying don't expect 'good bokeh', and you'l be fine?

It has good bokeh. but comparing and expecting the bokeh,. build quality, IQ etc to match a "L" lens is crazy.

O and at the end of the day i will be getting a 24L and the new 50L mk2 when that gets released. might just get the sigma or the 50 1.4 instead.

im going prime baby. only zoom i will use is a 70-200 f2.8 mk2 which is regarded as the best lens canon ever made and i have one :)

No one is saying it needs to match an L, however the lens clearly doesn't. I'm not saying you have to put an L on your mkiii either, but it shouldn't be too hard to stump up £350 for a sigma 50 1.4 that in most ways beats a 50L. That 50 1.8 just isn't doing your mkiii justice imo.

is the sigma 50 1.4 really that great?

Yes, yes it is (better than the 50L). If you have a body with Micro adjust then you don't need to worry about good/bad copy although my copy needed no adjustment.

Better in what way? Sharpness, colour rendition, bokeh? I assume it's quicker focusing because that isn't exactly hard lol.

Some people want/need that f/1.2 'look', for that you can't buy anything but the L. I've never found a problem with focus-shift but then I never really shoot it at MFD (mine's a late 2010). Don't forget it's weather sealed.

I hope you're not going to link me to MTF charts or anything silly. :p

Nice! Did you get the official grip or a third party one?

Official, that just arrived too.

Just put the grip on, it definitely feels nicer than the 7D, more ergonomic and comfortable in the hands.

Will post pics in a bit...hopefully eye fi card and 16-35mm will arrive later too

Crazy debate going on about 50mm in the new gear thread! I'll chuck in my 2p then mention my latest addition! The 50mm 1.8 is great for the money and while on a full frame it's slightly soft in the corners wide open it's certainly not a deal breaker. Bokeh wise it's circular wide open and anyone who says otherwise needs to look through one! Yes the 1.4 is a bit better built but has a dodgy micro usm motor which breaks in it and the bokeh is no better once you've stepped down from wide open as it still doesn't have rounded blades. The sigma has great bokeh but quite a few have issues and there are reports of focus shift when stepping down which is a right pain!

right time for some NEW (to me) GEAR I picked up a second hand 35mm f2 last week lovely little lens slightly noisey AF but so far I'm in love with the field of view and will definitely be upgrading if the new Sigma is any good!

Bokeh, sharpness, not build quality (obvious lol although the Sigma is v good), AF speed, PRICE!!! above all else for the optical performance you're getting.

If you go to the meet, we can freelens our 50s.

I would be interested to see how the 0.3 stops in aperture of the L makes any appreciable difference.

Can't you read them?

Jorzeh how much was that printer and how much are the inks for it? How come you decided on that specific on? Been contemplating a new printer for ages but never got round to it!

MTF numbers are obviously from the land of make believe...

Did I say that they shouldn't be used? It's horses for courses at the end of the day. I'd rather go out, use a lens and see what it can do rather than sit in front of a computer looking at numbers.

I never took you as the arrogant type from your previous postings and I've enjoyed reading through your previous threads, my opinion is sharply changing.

Nikon D3 on the way and a new bag. Arrives wednesday :) Loved the feel of the camera and I don't need more than 12mp, but the speed of the AF and burst rates are amazing for wildlife so made perfect sense. Well under budget also :D I'll put some pictures on when it all arrives.

Cost me 329.99 inks are around 12.99 to 15.99 but they do many A3 prints, I intend to use refillable cartridges with lyson inks though.
