Liquid nitrogen in a drink?

not true at all - it IS possible to swallow liquid nitrogen before it boils as many people have done it. It is the expansion of the gas that causes the damage - the cold would do very little as the body would warm it up pretty quickly.

I don't think LN would make it to your stomach. It'd all boil in your mouth / throat. I have personally tested the impact of the stuff on my own skin and it instantly boils. Have you any basis for your statement that "many people" have swallowed liquid nitrogen? Sorry, but that sounds like rubbish!

This is all about swallowing super chilled air / nitrogen and liquid (cocktail).... But NOT liquid nitrogen. LN was the cooling agent only.

The bar-person that made the cocktail probably just put too much liquid nitrogen in it which killed a massive amount of her stomach tissue. I'm sure a tiny amount is fine.

I'm sure this the likely explanation. Too much and drinking it very quickly straight away. Not sure how true the story of her downing two in a row is, as I've not seen that confirmed by any news source. Of course if that was the case, the amount of Liquid Nitrogen in her stomach, especially if already too much used would mean she would have a great deal inside her.

I don't know the full circumstances behind her case, but it is sad that at her age, her stomach has been removed.

However I can't understand experimenting with liquid nitrogen in drinks. Surely this is highly dangerous stuff as it is and should be banned.

Not as dangerous as the alcohol inthe drink, why is that added, it is very toxic.

*******?

I've eaten raw potato before.......

This is the vegetable I was talking about:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassava

Eat that raw, and the vegetable will literally turn you into a vegetable. When sold in the UK, it needs to have a health warning stating that it must be properly cooked before eating.

And yea, I've eaten raw / undercooked potato before too, it just causes very painful explosive liquid poop, but isnt toxic.

Apparently it seems she simply downed two of them? I think someone said before that this kind of drink would suit a classy bar / club, but not the UK club culture, and I agree with that 100%. Give anything like this to an 18-21 year old in the UK, and all they will want to do is literally down as many as they can until they either A) Pass out unconscious, or B) Die / severely harm themselves.

you might not like it but its true - i have also personally used liquid nitrogen for over 20 years.

there are many reports of people swallowing liq nitrogen and injuries based on gas expansion if you care to look in the literature - it is a well documented injury.
a thin layer will instantly boil off but with a larger amount the inside is insulated - a bucket takes hours to boil off for example - the liquid is cooled as the surface evaporates.

the main injury is from gas expansion - read the reports.

Its not a case of liking anything!

Its my opinion based on personal experience working with LN during my masters degree!

Anyway i bow to your greater experience in cryogenics!

This happened where I live.

Thankfully the bar is now closed. I hope Oscars get sued and never serve this drink again. She was on her 18th Birthday party and would have been drunk, of course she's going to down it. Completely irresponsible staff!

What is it with poor news stories these days? Just like this one, more and more of them barely have any details or information on why and what exactly happened, leaving everyone to speculate.

Pretty sad really . Her whole life made significantly worse on what should have been a great night of celebration

No one deserves that

Just watching this story on the news, now I remember why I don't watch the news.

"OMG one person out of a thousand has been injured by this we need to ban it now"

Rage.

I would have said it's obvious most people out in British towns at night are not in any kind of responsible state to handle cryogenic drinks! Sad story though, should never have happened.

Call me extreme, if you like, but I don't see any good reason for putting liquid nitrogen in drinks. Ought to be banned outright from all bars, pubs and clubs.

Why, for one instance, lets ban everything as everything can be dangerous.

I'm not a fan of telling people what to do, but putting liquid nitrogen in a cocktail for a smokey effect seems like a stupid practice.

Girl was 18, it was her birthday. It was her first time in a bar getting cocktails. Its not super suprising she didn't know any better.
