Duplicate the layer so you have two car layers then use the pen tool/lasso to trace around the car and apply that selection as a layer mask to the top layer (effectively separating the car from the background).

Then use the pen/lasso tool to go around and cut out all the bits in the car you don't want to colour; bumpers, windows, registration plate etc and remove it to your layer mask.

Once you've done that you're effectively left with a layer mask for just the paint work of your car. Select this layer then use Image > Adjustments > Hue/saturation with the 'colorise' option checked to re-colour it (paintwork only, as your mask stops the rest of it being visible).

Ahhhhhh thanks Pho. I use the ancient Paintshop Pro 7 but that all makes sense to me because everything you've mentioned are in PSP7 too, including adjustment layers.
