Hello,

Having had a few friends been very unlucky recently with Tyres blowing up, not being able to be repaired....the topic of Tyre insurance came up.

One guy has had 3 new tyres in last 9 months due to 1 Blow out and 2 punctures that weren't repairable - he has 18" Rims and it cost him £300 for 3 years insurance cover - which covers him for up to 5 tyres per year.

So... Does anyone here have tyre insurance? Whats your opinions?

I'm thinking of looking into it given my higher mileage of late and cost of my tyres.

I've never had a blowout - what causes it to happen? Do you have to have bad tracking or drive with poorly inflated tyres for a while?

Seems like the kind of insurance that is there to be abused.

Tyres running low on tread... hello pot hole, hello pavement, hello Swiss army knife.

Its only damage or punctures that cant be repaired.

Been having a look on-line today...seems to vary from Cheap'ish policies offered by specific garages (Kwik fit and the like) that payout based on tread remaining on tyre when you make claim - You can only claim if used at their garages and cant be used in conjunction with other offers) so may mean you walk in with a tyre that is say on 4mm and you get 30% off a tyre....but the tyre price is 50% more expensive compared to online deals etc....

The other end of the scale is cover for all tyres, with any level of remained tread at any garage but you pay more and pay for X number of years cover for a limited number of tyres for that period.

Most policies seem to offer free puncture repair etc

But as people have said...seems open to abuse etc...but maybe the honest people make up for/aka pay for the dishonest ones..... like most insurances! :p

My original quote was in reference to bashing your car over a pothole or kerb to damage the tyre.

Clearly you can cut the tyre with a knife or push a nail into it should you decide to.

Exactly. Quite why you would run over a pothole do damage the tyre is beyond me.

I have 3 year complete wheel and tyre cover, it cost £399 through Nissan and I can claim up to £450 a maximum of 5 times in the 3 years for wheel repair and or tyre replacement.
I also have no limit to the amount of claims I can make on puncture repair up to £50 although I am not sure about repair on run flats.

If I even have to use it once it will be worth it as the cost of the stock run flats is crazy and Nissan has a monopoly on them with Dunlop so you can't buy them anywhere else.

If after the 3 years is almost up and I haven't used it or still have some claim left I can have the wheels reconditioned for any small damage they may have picked up.

I don't plan on slashing my tyres when the tread runs low or anything like that but if someone does slash them, at least I am covered.

Depending on the wear of the tyre depends how much the insurance will contribute towards a replacement doesn't it?

Certainly does in the case of the insurance they try to sell you in ATS and similar tyre places.
