Southern Blood

The roughest place I've experienced (though not in the UK) is without a doubt Naples in Italy. Drove through it after landing at Napoli airport on route to Sorrento a few years back!

Edinburgh / Glasgow and Manchester are nothing compared to this place.

I can't be a searching for it on my smartphone (my account of Naples), but I would have to agree, having been chased by a gang in Naples, that the people there are harder than my nob when it's being noshed by zefan's mum.

Funny enough mine was walking between two of our work buildings in Wythenshawe in the middle of the day. As we walked across the shopping centre that separated them there were obvious drug deals and prostitution going on out of the shop doorways. This is going back at least 10 years now though. No wonder we had previously been advised to get a taxi instead of walking 5 mins.

I went to Staffs Uni in Stoke, living in Shelton for 4 years. It's definitely rougher then the peaceful village down south of Crowborough. On visits to Manchester though I felt fine and safe, walking round and night didn't phase me either but was only on the main roads near wherever the Roomzzz/China Town is. Didn't seem THAT bad but maybe I just wasn't paying attention.

I was chatting to someone the other day who said Naples was seriously rough, but my girlfriend and i went there for a 2 week holiday a few years ago and stayed in the middle of the city. We wandered all over during the day and a fair bit at night as well without seeing any trouble at all!

To be honest we should have stayed in Sorrento and visited Naples rather than the other way round, but that was to do with how pretty Sorrento is and how big and hectic Naples is. Maybe we were just lucky though - that was the upshot of the conversation I had the other day anyway!

Roughest place I've been walking about must be either Salford about 15 years ago, or Brixton very late at night. I'd say Brixton felt more immediately life threatening dangerous, and Salford more scummy and likely to lose my wallet dangerous.

What travel lodge exactly? The one nearest the MEN (assuming your gig was there) is sound. The rest are more outer city centre but still what your describing sounds a bit like you need to man up :p

I've been to Manchester, it was ace. No trouble at all, didn't see any of the stuff you're talking about. The same with Liverpool. I guess you just need to stay clear of the rough parts the same as most large city's.

Edinburgh isn't even bad, just guard your ears if you get in a fight, idiots like to bite nowadays it seems..

Outside the Blue Orchid in Croydon on a Saturday night.

I remember going to Tiger Tiger near East Croydon station. When we left there were five or six riot vans parked outside 'just in case' and some berk was getting a good pasting from the bouncer for being a bit drunk.

Never again.

I remember going to Salford and seeing razor wire on the drainpipes of shop fronts, that was a bit of an eye opener.

But I've walked through quite a few rough places around the world at night without worry or hassle, but then I maintain a lot of that is down to confidence and not broadcasting 'victim' with your body language.

Never really been anywhere that's really bad. Have driven through St Pauls at night and it seemed a bit dodgy as I recall seeing someone in a trench coat at 3 AM walking the streets.
I have lived in Swindon my whole life, it's just "chav rough" not "violent rough". The worst thing that could happen is that you might get in an argument with a chav.
