This Limited Edition of 10 units only now makes it possible to have a state of the art hardcore gaming laptop for under £1000. Though we do recommend customising the laptop with more memory along with additional storage. But now you can have an Intel based 7970M powerhouse of a gaming laptop all for under £1000, though you can also spec the system up with options that take it beyond the £1000 price too. Rest assured the 7970M graphics in this laptop can handle any game with ease.

For hardcore gamers the OcUK Extreme P170EM is the perfect choice. There is no more powerful or better constructed option, with the latest Intel Core I7 Processor there is no shortage of power and for those who only demand the most powerful, we can construct the OcUK Extreme P170EM with an Intel I7 Extreme processor too.

This chassis uses the absolute very latest in technology such as SATA3, USB3.0, Bluetooth, WiFi but the most impressive of all is the fact this system feature an ATi Radeon 7970M with 2GB of GDDR5 dedicated memory for absolutely blistering performance. Infact this is the fastest gaming laptop we sell and more importantly its also one of the best value and offers you the ability to tailor to your exact needs.

With a backlit keyboard you will no longer have problems finding the keys during the dark or whilst playing your favourite shoot 'em up! Not only that but with a choice of colours to suit your environment and taste your notebook will look more stylish than ever!

With a LED backlit 17.3" screen with True HD (1920x1080) resolution games have never looked so good on the go or ran so smooth due to the power of the ATI HD 7970M onboard graphics. The OcUK Extreme P170EM feature a blue backlit keyboard and high quality THX speakers for the ultimate gaming experience.

For memory we only use the highest performance and most reliable for laptops, which is Corsair Vengeance which is set to run at 1600MHz with T1 memory timings resulting in absolute instant response. 8GB is the default choice which is more than adequate for all task and gaming, we only recommend 16GB kit if your also doing a lot of photography work or heavy multi-tasking. Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz will extract the very best performance from the OcUK Extreme P170EM causing zero bottlenecks in the system.

For hard drive options, we recommend the primary drive as an SSD drive, this means from point of pressing power on your should be at the Windows 7 Desktop in approx 10 seconds and with an SSD applications and games load more or less instantly. Of course if you preferre capacity you can choose a large capacity HDD or a Hybrid drive too. Our recommendation is to select an SSD for the primary drive along with a HDD as the secondary drive for storage.

You see this is what is stopping me from buying one, I'm very interested in getting another laptop - if I already didn't have enough of them..

Anyhow, this is a great deal but the 7970M is stopping me... I know there is meant to be a fix, but its still putting me off... shame as the GTX 680M adds a lot more to the cost of these laptops..

Hmm this laptop looks pretty nice and im looking for a new gaming machine.

Fewquestions:

1) What panel does it use for the screen? is it matte or glossy?

2) What manufacturer makes the chassis?

3) Is there no option to the cheaper i7 3610QM CPU?

4) What is the rated battery life?

Rich.

EDIT - To answer some of my own questions... it's Clevo, right? http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Clevo-P170EM-Notebook.73442.0.html

1. Shall come back on this later
2. Clevo P170EM
3. Its a 3630QM, not 3610QM! Yes there is, check the options.
4. Upto 4hrs not gaming, playing games around 1.5hrs.

Hi Gibbo,

You misunderstand me for Q3. I know there is a 3630QM there as an upgrade ot the i5... what im asking is if you can add an option for the entry-level i7 3610M which is a little cheaper, as for many of us that's all the CPU horsepower we need. :)

I am afraid not sorry, because Intel give us support on 3630 to allow this price, they won't give that support on 3610. ;)

P.S. To answer Q1. The screen is glossy! :)

Isn't the Matte Screen better then Glossy?

Glossy can be a nightmare in bright lights, but then glossy is meant to be better if the conditions are right - such as sitting in a dark room.

Notebookcheck says the screen is excellent, and bright enough to see even in difficult conditions.

Oh yeah the brightness and image quality is the best I've seen, they are on par with the Samsung flagship units and if anything brighter. :)

Damnit gibbo, why do you have to put this up now?! I'm looking for something like this, but I don't have the money just now :(

i'd put an order in for one of these right now, as you can spec the heck out of them and the laptop would no doubt do me well if it wasn't for -

  • Its not a very nice looking laptop
  • I'm not sure about the AMD 7970M GPU - meant to be a fix for the enduro problems, but got bitten before with ATI and their 9700 pro issues which never did get fixed (years ago, problem with card and some motherboard BIOS Setting meaning display driver stopped working - annoying)
  • Glossy screen, although all my other laptops have glossy screen so not such an issue

The laptop in itself looks to be very good, full feature lots of options.. I don't know, if I can get assurance that AMD GPU will work then I'm very tempted... Its so much cheaper then the GTX 680M...

Must not buy just yet... :p

Well according to anandtech the 7970m hotfix due to be released anyday now really does sort a lot of the issue out, plus when the 7970m does seem to be working in some games its getting higher scores then the nvidia...thats without the hotfix... food for thought.

I get my 7970m tomorrow so i'll see how it copes, although i'm not stressing about it.

1. Its simple yet clean design.
2. AMD have already fixed the problem as proven by Anandtech, the hotfix will be publically available very soon!
3. Glossy screen is very nice!
