Declaring car modifications on insurance quotes usually results in outrageously high premiums, as I'm sure you all know. I was wondering given that most insurance firms consider a policy invalid if modifications are not mentioned, do most modders just bite the bullet and declare all, or are there some loopholes which can be exploted in this regard.

Thanks for sharing any insight into this!

Get the right insurer and declare absolutely everything. Dont give them the slightest excuse not to pay out if you damage your car etc.

bite the bullet, for the sake of say £100 extra for all your bought mods its not worth the risk if an accident does happen.

You're using the wrong insurers if mods are making your premium sky high. I've been with insurers where mods make little to no difference. The coilovers on my old Impreza added about £35 to my premium.

all mods declared, i dont want to chance it, i upgraded a few things recently and phoned up to declare, apart from admin fee for changes to policy there was no change to premiums, on top of that i've had a massive reduction in next years policy which starts next week.

Make sure that the policy will replace like for like parts, not like for stock too.

Last time I tried to declare all the mods on my merc my current insurance refused it :P this is why I chose to turn it into a track car this year.

Sky insurance are pretty good for modified vehicles if you are struggling with quotes.

Yup, really depends on the car too. Virtually everything's non-standard on mine and it costs £200 a year fully comp - about the same as a standard one. I declare everything, for peace of mind. Builds a good reputation with the insurer too.

Modded policies are normally cheaper than normal ones in my experience.

Get onto Adrian Flux, Green Light Insurance and Sky Insurance - one of them will be able to help you out.

such a shame that they wont spec me a policy as i am under 35! On another forums i use there is a chap that insures 6 car for £199 a year. This included windscreen cover, reasonable mileage etc. One broken windscreen and they would be at a loss!

Strange, I'm 26 and insured with them! Maybe it depends on the car :) I had a trade policy with them too, might reinstate it soon.

Readingn back at the thread it looks to me like it's actually an ad, the prices and stuff are completely fabricated. No insurer in their right mind with insure 6 cars for a total £269, at the very minimum, £300 for each car with a huge voluntary excess and 10+ years no claims.

I was about to chip in and say, it all depends on the age of the driver and what "experience" they have. Or that's what I've noticed.

I was looking at getting my Fiesta ST lowered. If I took it now, on my current policy (Me @ 20 years old, 2 years named driver no claims, parents on the policy.) it'd be an extra £300

If I wait until January when I hopefully get my first year of NCD, not only does the cost of my policy half, but the cost of modifications only costs £30 more than a standard policy

One of my previous insurers asked about "all upgrades above standard specification" on my car, including those fitted at the factory.
So I listed all those and mentioned my stage1 remap (200bhp - 248bhp) and the premium was loaded with an extra £50 - seems worth it.
