At a press event in London today, Sony unveiled a complete overhaul of its digital store front. The new look PS Store is set to replace the old design in Europe on Wednesday October 17 and brings with it a host of new features.

The PlayStation store is to receive a completely new look and additional functionality, Sony revealed today.

Aesthetic changes include a more visually orientated store-front intended to better highlight new content, alongside a redesigned UI that places sections for games, movies and TV content on the front page.

The redesign ensures the entire screen is used to display content and everything scales, so users with a SD connection will be able to experience the same redesigned aesthetic.

The more dynamic look does away with the old, blue background and revolves around a “Hero” concept. This places high-profile characters from popular games, such as FIFA 13 and Assassin’s Creed 3, on each page alongside windows featuring new titles and highlighted content.

The pages themselves scroll from left to right, on what Sony describes as a carousel set-up, which puts more of the store’s content within easy reach as the user moves through scrolling pages.

It’s from a functional perspective that the store will undergo its biggest changes. The search function is now smart, so provides a reductive list of options as each letter of the search phrase is typed. Abbreviations and mis-spellings will also be covered, allowing users to search for MW3 or Mas Efect.

Search performance will be further refined over the coming months, “What will be refreshing to customers is that this will represent a new agile programme that will enable us to add new content every month or so, rather than dumping the new content and saying we’re done,” explained PS Store product development manager, Elliot Dumville.

Filtering has also been improved, filtering is now possible by content type, but also by price and even by peripheral support.

PS Vita and PSP integration sees two separate catalogues of content for those devices. Dumville explained that the vast majority of PS Store users browse by PS3 content and so this separating of home and mobile console offerings will allow them to browse only content that is relevant to them. The search function will still return results for content across all platforms.

In a guided tour of the store, Dumville showed-off grouped content, which brings together all content for any given title in one place, with links to demos, full games, DLC and themes. Searching for Black Ops, for example, shows related screen shots, links to a demo and provides recommendations for other Call of Duty content.

Movie content works in a very similar way to games, and continues the ‘Hero’ concept found in the game section.

The redesigned PS Store will be rolled-out in all regions in which PS Store is currently available, starting next week on Wednesday October 17 in PAL regions, culminating in a US launch on Tuesday October 23. VG247 will have an in-depth look at its features and a more extensive discussion with both Dumville and Gordon Thornton, VP of network operations, in the coming days.

Wow, you really do put the least amount of effort possible into your threads don't you? How many threads have you created in the past 7 days which are basically cut and paste walls of text with a "what do you think?" at the bottom? If this was in GD you would have been suspended by now.

To actually add to the thread though instead of just being negative, I think the new store looks really good. There are obviously influences taken from the XBL Marketplace and I don't think that's a bad thing, I just hope there aren't as many adverts as there are on XBL.

A few images seeing as the OP couldn't be bothered:

Doesn't seem to look all that different...it's just black and they've moved the Cart/Search buttons left. I like the carousel idea though.

Very media centre like. It will definitely go well in the movie section though.

Nice to see games and their content are more streamlined for faster access.

Honestly I didn't even mind the old one, so as long as it is very usable and I rather have them put more effort into subtle things, like screenshots and system information (Hard drive space requirements etc) in the game's description area. It's been rather random in that area, whereas with the likes of the U.S and Japanese PSN Stores, they always had it.

I really prefer the way it is now, it looks super bland compared to how it does now :(

Not a fan at all of this,!

As a side note, I really wish they would lower their prices for digital downloads, £49.99 for a game you can get in a shop more than £10 cheaper, is just insane. Do many people buy things of PSN?

Ah yeah, Windows 8 thing...

That was my 1st thought!!!

tbh, I have got used to the store as it is. The categories are a bit confusing at times and the delay in loading tile images whilst background downloading is a bit annoying. Also sometimes it freezes. Sometimes new content doesn't show in the right category and you have to manually search for it.

If it fixes these things, I will be impressed. If not, It just looks like a black windows (phone) 8-ish skin to the existing store.

Anything will be an improvement, the current store is horrendous. The search often doesn't work well, the recommendations panel to the right hand side often doesn't even show items related to what you're currently viewing, information is sparse and screenshots are often a rarity too. Not to mention that it's often just a big long list of 'stuff' instead of being correctly categorised, organised or named.

When i first saw this i thought it was very metro looking, i quite like the idea, cant wait to see how it is though, hopefully quicker as it can take an age backing out of something after starting a dload.

His location "one nation under sony" says a lot I feel

Anyone get the feeling that Sony are laying down the foundations on how the PS4 user interface will look? Honestly its great that they are revamping the PSN Store but its kinda late in the day and the last revamp wasnt that long ago (but that was minor compared but added pretty essential things) so it makes me wonder if they are a bit more ahead with the software side than they were with the PS3 (lets be honest its the main thing that 'still' lets it down)

I notice new games are still over priced. £49.99. Really?!

Sony have already said they don't control the prices of many of the games, and the ones that they publish are priced usually around the same, or slightly higher than the high street because they don't want to put high street stores out of business.
