Howdy!

Not very often I go to this section of the forum, but was wondering if I could get some of you frequent gym goers' advice...

I have recently started going gym doing weights and a tiny bit of cardio.

Last time I went was on Wednesday night (1st time in a month) and my arms have pretty much locked causing me to look like Mr Burns out the Simpsons or a T-Rex. I cannot straighten my arms, where my elbow is on the underside the muscle is very tender and am in quite a lot of discomfort.

Obviously this has stopped me from going to the gym since, and would prefer it not to happen again or at least very often.

Now I know that because I am a noob to the gym, my body will not be used to the stress I have caused it, so may be going into overdrive - but is there anything you guys take that aid in muscle recovery? I have been told this - http://www.londonsupplements.co.uk/new-and-improved-phd-synergy-iso-7-2kg.html is good because of the extra stuff it has in it that aids recovery. So will be getting this tomorrow (if you guys also confirm its good).

Anything else you can recommend doing or taking? Would like to go to the gym 2-3 times a week, but this has obviously put me off a bit.

For the record, this has happened before, when I was on ship I had a heavy session (again, not going for long time prior) and locked for about a week. Not good!

Thanks in advance!

You are suffering from delayed onset muscle soreness.

Time and more training are the only real remedies. :)

Post-workout drinks will help the muscle refuel and can reduce the duration of DOMS by providing your muscles with adequate nutrition, but no more so than eating properly will.

I think you already know this happens when you haven't worked the muscles for a long time - they just aren't used to it.

Next time will be fine, you don't need potions, although a balanced diet will help.

If you haven't trained for some time (life does get in the way sometimes) why not get back into it with a lighter workout? If you'd not run for some time would you go straight into a half marathon?

What you're talking about might be something more serious like tendonitis. I had that once when I overdid stuff a bit, it made gripping absolute agony and was a constant ache - a completely different sensation to normal DOMS.

:edit: I read it wrong, if you haven't been for a while then it's most likely not going to be what I say and it is you just being a massive fanny about DOMS. I prescribe one cup of MTFU and a swift slap around the boobs.

Happened to me on my first day and lasted around 1 week, after a work out it would generally feel better, but it hurt like a bitch, couldn't really move my arms in or stretch it all.

I found eating more protein and taking Whey shakes helps a lot. I still feel sore now (Only been going for 2 weeks) but its more of a good kinda of sore that lets me know I have been pushing myself instead of non stop pain.

I would suggest rather than whey shakes you found it only hurts so bad (doms) when you start a new routine that your muscles aren't accustomed to. It's never so bad as the first time.

General recovery is helped by nutrition, which can be a shake but doesn't have to be, but doms is just a bridge you have to cross.

^this

DOMS is certainly worse if your recovery is bad, which nutrition contributes to. On top of a good diet, even more protein won't reduce DOMS.
