Ok, I need to order my new card this weekend. I can get either:

Sapphire Vapor X 7950
or
ASUS GTX 660Ti

Both are the same price, games will be run at 1920 x 1080. The card wants to be quiet!

Which do I go for?

Those cards can not be compared . Compare the 660 ti along the lines of a 7850/70. Get the 7950 and oc it to a 670 standard and save your self the money.

Not quite what I expected as reading most reviews seem to put the 2 cards as equals at this resolution. I have a 120Mhz monitor though, so higher framerates are useful.

That's because they're often reviewed on a combination of older drivers or without an overclock.

AMD's drivers were shoddy until the last couple of releases which have seen improvements.

Also the 7950 at stock speeds is quite underclocked. If you push it to 1150-1200 Mhz on the core (which is what most 7950's do) then the 660Ti just can't match a 7950 at a max overclock level.

It's not surprising though. The 660Ti and 7950 aren't hierarchically in the same place. The nVidia comparison point in terms of pure performance is the 670. I know why you have compared the 660Ti and 7950 though and that is due to the price point. nVidia cards are more expensive at present.

I think it was just the options of the extras like physX and 3d that i would have with nvidia. would also have got borderlands 2 as well. but if the 7950 is clearly the better card that would be the one to go for.

7950.
My friend tried getting me to by a 660ti, but I ended up with the sapphire vapor x. He went and bought an asus 660ti just to prove me wrong.

Using heaven as a bench mark, his was clocked at 1155/1740 (boost) mine was 1000/1600. Mine scored low 2000 and his just hit 1700.
My gpu is borked as well, it keeps freezing every time I use heaven in the exact same spots and it skews my score.

So what you're basically saying is although you score higher his nvidia card actually runs properly lol?

Heaven is always smoother on the second run. Always hitches in the first few seconds on the first run after opening heaven.
