hi there

i got my 2500k about 6 months ago, and have had it running sable at 4.6ghz since. core voltage is 1.38, which is the lowest volts i can achieve stability at 4.6 with. when i was for testing for stability then, i did 20 passes of ibt and a few hours of prime.

i'm currently using the hd3000 gfx, and today i ran ibt to check what temps im getting. during the 3rd pass i got bsod! i've never had a bsod over the 6 months of having the 2500k.

could it be that using the onboard gfx affects my oc? or has the cpu degraded over time?

cooler is a nh-d14 and load temps are about 73.

thanks in advance

if its not stable its not stable. thought i had my 2500k sorted but it jus failed the 20th run of 20 runs of ibt. notch up the vcore and try again

also reckon if u hadda done a few hours more prime the 1st time u probably would have got an error

When do you run prime and IBT daily??? All they prove is you can run IBT and Prime nothing more. You may get BSOD running games or video encoding or whatever you actually use your PC for.

Just use your PC if its stable for your use dont worry.

i use them as a good indication my computer is stable and not likely to bsod in the middle of something important. u have ur way i have mine........simples :)

I may be wrong but thought they were supposed to be stress testing apps/software.

Taken from Wiki,

"Use for stress testing

Over the years, Prime95 has become extremely popular among PC enthusiasts and overclockers as a stability testing utility. It includes a "Torture Test" mode designed specifically for testing PC subsystems for errors in order to help ensure the correct operation of Prime95 on that system. This is important because each iteration of the Lucas-Lehmer depends on the previous one; if one iteration is incorrect, so will be the entire primality test."

I dont know any of the top enthusiasts who use IBT even Intel dont use it and the engineers cringe at how you guys do.

Torture is a good word for it Torturing the silicon!!!

What I am saying is your PC is not stable because it passes or fails this synthetic nonsense.

BSODs most often occur during light load transitions. A stress test simply confirms your CPU is stable at maximum load for an extended period.

Somewhat correct or moving from loads or with different types of stresses. i.e Because it passes X only means it can do X!!! Nothing more!!!

yes it definitely can.

I noticed the exact same thing with my 2700k solid overclock and then thought hey im gona try the onboard graphics out... then flop.

either up the vcore or drop the onboard.

+1

Anything extra a CPU has to do whether its a higher clock, more/faster memory or integrated graphics is more work/heat which can cause instability.

Yes it can affect stability as Kaapstad notes any extra load does. Simple as.

VCCIO/VTT , VCCSA and PLL as well as Vcore may also need adjusting.

i sold my old card and my new one should come in the post tomorrow, thats why ive been using onboard. thanks for all your help though
