Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Always test new RAM using memtest86+

Thanks :)

Any ideas how long it takes? Server is in constant use so it's a pain to turn it off.

/edit for some reason I have just started the memtest from a bootable USB stick and it is saying the ram is DDR800 @ 400mhz; 6 6 6, 15

But it is actually DDR3 1333mhz; 9 9 9, 24

I couldnt see anywhere in the bios to mess with ram settings at all.

In cpu-z It looks ok.

Any thoughts? Is it still safe to run the test?

Thanks,

G

It ran one complete pass with no errors, I'm assuming that's good enough :)

Hmm looks like it does show as this:

Is that right?

Thanks,

I'm selling mine! :(

I just don't use it to it's full potential. It sits there effectively being a NAS. I've been meaning to sort exchange out on it for months but I just do not have the time unforuntately.

So up for sale it goes, got my eye on a cheap NAS box by Netgear which should leave me about £100 in my pocket for a similar solution to what I have now.

Well I got around to sticking the 16GB I bought into mine

That's a shame! :(

You going to list it on MM? How much you going to ask for it?

Yeah its in MM. I never claimed the cashback on it so anyone else is welcome to do it. Its up for £230 inc P&P. Making it £130 by the time someone claims the cashback. It's also got an 8gb ram upgrade.

That's a pretty good deal. Hope you sell it. :) I'd be interested if I didn't already have a ML110 G7 to play with.

Guys I'm pulling my hair out trying to find out how this thing would perform with a HD 7750 Low profile GPU or even if it would work!

The Microserver is very popular but yet no one on the internet as ever benchmarked it or played games on it!

I know it will work as a NAS doh!, I also Know it runs well with XBMC in conjuction with Windows and a HDMI capable video card like a Radeon HD6450. but I want to step up a gear and use a 7750 which doesn't seem to use much more power than the 6450 but is quite a bit more powerful!

What desktop CPU does it closely compare to? maybe I can google that and get some idea of how it might perform.

It's a dual core atom so it will be like putting a graphics card into a NetBook.it's never going to set the world on fire with modern gaming.

from the limited info I've managed to find the N40L Scores 971 and the Atom N570 Scores 635 on PassMark. So this would indicate it's a better CPU than the Atom but then that still leaves the question of how it would perform with a decent Video card like the 7750 or even a 6670?

This is a quote from XBMC forums

"The maximum (from performance view) for the microserver is a Sapphire Radeon HD 6670 low profile, 1GB GDDR5. People have reported it works without problems, although its max tdp is 44W and HP stated a max tdp of 25W for the pcie x16 slot."

So somewhere on the internets there has been discussion of a card with a max 44w working on the Microserver with a 25w rate PCie lane. So my thinking is if the 6670 works at 44w then surely the 7750 at 41w will also work. But with no confirmation it's a gamble!

I had a netbook that was restricted to Atom and Intel GMA 950 graphics and that surprised me at what games it could run. It ran ePSXe (PSOne emulator) with filtered graphics very well.

I don't want or expect to be able to play modern games at high settings etc.

What I would hope for is to be able to play games like Trackmania Nations, F1 2012, COD 4, Source Games and some emulation of older systems (HyperSpin) with medium settings at 720p resolution.

I'm seriously thinking of getting one of these... but does anyone know how it will perform as a desktop/server compared to an ageing Dell P4 3ghz 3gb beast?

Would you mind doing me a favour by running CPU-Z on it and letting me know the speed it runs your 16GB at in mhz please?

/edit is anyone else able to do this for me please?

Thanks,

G

Ive finally gotten around to setting up esxi 5.1 with 4 x 2TB disks on a LSI controller.
I've installed the LSI offline_bundle and CIM providers, and I can see the disks and their status under the Health section

Thing is, i've read in a few places how to remotely manage these disks using the LSI Storage Manager on win7 machine, but I just cant get it to work. Anyone have any experiences with this?

A little OT, but hows the performance when running off the LSI as opposed to the onboard? Just I have the exact same card sitting at home waiting to go in - salvaged it from a server we were gonna chuck at work. :)

Hi

Mine has arrived, I have also got a HP 410i Raid controller, need to purchase some HDD...was thinking WD red 3TB 3 to begin with....any other disk I should consider?

Seagate do a 3TB that £30 cheaper then the WD reds but a 3rd of the warranty...ummm

suggestions please ;-)

It's been a while since I've touched a P4, so can't comment. But I'd assume about the same if not a bit better, and it'll be a lot more energy efficient.

That's what I was thinking; I have a HP mini 5102 Netbook and It seems this server is similar spec to it...

My Dell is dying slowly, but maybe I can salvage the VGA card as well as the HDD's, then I would just need to get hold of a sound card.

I'm thinking of using this as a HTPC/Desktop/Server for now but later it would assume Server/HTPC duties only.

Im sure its been mentioned / asked in this thread but how do you manage the raid on this server (without going into boot) as I have it just hidden in my garage and it doesn't have a screen attached etc I just remote on from time to time.....

I am happy windows 8 runs on mine after the BSoD on 7, I need to find server 2012 to buy/pre order, is it out yet? As I cant see it anywhere....

Then I need to run a long cable to the garage!

-EDIT-

Think I have found it for £27 on the rainforest. Not the clearest though...
