The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

You say big bulky zoom but some primes are even bigger and bulkier!

All for the good of the imagery they produce though :p

I don't think I could cope without a zoom... It's why when I buy a dslr the first lens I'll get is a nifty fifty. Being able to use a prime is a major part of the skillset people should have.

That said depending on your uses/general purposes a non prime is incredibly useful in many situations, and I doubt few would go on holiday with only a prime.

The great thing about primes is the price aperture ratio.

I did say generally. I'm aware the 200 f2 or 14mm f2.8 are huge, but you try finding a zoom lens that's as small as the 28mm or 50mm ;)

Zooms are great for when you know you're going to be taking photos, but if like me you carry your camera around everywhere on the off chance you'll find the weight makes it a burden. A D3 with a 24-70 f2.8 on probably wouldn't ever come out of my bag, a D3 with a 50 or 85mm lens on gets a lot more use as it's just so much easier to take out with me.

My sigma EX DG 2x tele converter just turned up along with my nikon 105mm F2.8 macro VR lens. Both of them are very nice copies and the sigma works brilliantly with my 70-200 F2.8. Doesn't slow the AF down at all which was a pleasant surprise and the sharpness, although not as good as when its not used, is still more than good enough for wildlife unless I was doing extreme cropping, which shouldn't be needed. Gonna go out later today with it and see what it can do properly lol.

Still waiting for my sigma 85mm F1.4 lens to turn up, so today is like christmas to a photographer :P

New uber cheap matte box/flag for front of my HDSLR rig - dont see point in paying more for whats really just an extended hood - no need for slide in filters.

Yeah and its a follow focus system. Its not the best in the world but its fairly smooth using the ring gears though hasnt got hard stops and changing direction has a bit of lag/play. But still miles easier and more precise than using the on lens focus ring. Also got an alloy crank that goes in the square black hole in the centre of the blue circle for even more precise/slow movement.

Well my sigma 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM just turned up and what a piece of kit that is! Its so damn sharp and the bokeh is just immense. It really makes whatever you focus on pop out like its almost 3D. Colour rendition is beautiful as well. Worth absolutely every penny. Can't wait to take it to uni and start getting some portraits done to see what it can really do.

Nice to all of the above!

Also, you finding the weight of the new 85 juicy? :D

It weighs a lot more than I was expecting it to and theres visibly quite a lot of glass in it. The AF is so damn quick as well which I wasn't expecting, which is a big bonus. I got the nikon AF-S 105mm F2.8 macro lens and I honestly can't tell the difference from a sharpness point of view lol. The nikon lens is also a lot lighter than I thought it was going to be :S

I'll sort a sample pic out in a min :D

Excellent! Told you it was impressive in weight, sharpness, AF etc :D

Roll on the 35mm!

Sigma are definitely winning with these lenses :)
