So, I'm going to Stratford with the missus this weekend and wondered if anyone could recommend things to do there?

We're doing Alton Towers on the Friday, so not getting there until Saturday morning and we're staying one night.

Thanks in advance!

visiting stratford of all places for a weekend :|

Well other than what spikey has already said there's pretty much only 1 other thing, Westfield shopping center.

Other than that, a pretty grim place with not much going for it.

Theatre and a meal? You could also visit Shakespeare's birthplace along with Anne Hathaways cottage if you've never been before.

I also hear the Mad museum is interesting Mad Museum.

Are you staying in a central hotel?

At the bit of river near the big theatre, hire a motorboat for an hour and go up the river, its lots of fun and you can pretend you are a sea captain. The best ones have a steering wheel and a seat to sit in, none of this move the outboard motor rubbish.

Might be better in summer but if you wrap up I'm sure you'll have fun seeing ducks and swans.

I know that, you are at the bottom end of town over the river, if you like Indian food there is a great restaurant called Aladdin's in Tiddington which I can highly recommend. Also there is a chinese a few doors down called Mr. Chans (it used to be lovely last time I went there, but unsure of if it is still as good as it used to be, I've heard varying reports) but there are also nice restaurants in town that you may want to check out during the day for the night.

I take it you have a car? Parking is paid for on street during the day and limits you to only 1 hour (there are ample car parks in town but they do charge upwards of £2 for a couple of hours) but after 6pm parking on the street is free in the town centre.

As mentioned hiring a boat and going on the river may be fun if you wrap up and we have decent weather this weekend.

Fellow Stratfordian - Ill also recommend Aladdins, which is even closer to the YHA :)

My wife works for the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and so I have been treated to the historic houses within Stratford more than a few times. There is more to see than just the birthplace (Anne Hathaways cottage, Mary Ardens etc). Seeing all of the houses would take a day at a leisurely pace, plus there are some nice pubs along the way.

Then see a play at night - perfect.

YHA is a couple of miles out of Stratford, but there is a bus stop outside across the road if you don't want to take the car in to town, which obviously gets very busy! Alladins is great, Chans is good too. A lot of good restaurants and pubs in town, the RSC is well worth a visit, even if its just to visit the coffee shop and sit outside overlooking the river.

butterfly farm is worth a visit, loads and loads of butterflies everywhere, and go up the tower at the RSC if you feel like paying, not a bad view. I was there for 2 or 3 days in Jan 2011 while my girlfriend was at a conference there and got a bit bored but should probably have gone to one of the museums.

Shakespeare's birthplace seemed expensive so didn't go in, but you can see the building from the outside. You can also go to the holy trinity church where he was buried if you're into that...
Thai boathouse over the bridge(s) towards all the b&bs was a decent restaurant (we went for lunch)

Stratford is quite small so you can see most of the highlights in a day.
