Cold War Missile Sites Listed.

i love old ww2 bunkers and stuff like this.

where i grew up in nottingham there was a rolls royce airfield near by and even though we werent suposed to and they had roaming security patrolling the perimeter we used to sneak in and explore.

we discovered that every hill on the airfield were artificial and inside each one was a mini ww2 bunker and some of them still had old ww2 radio gear , tables , chairs etc inside.

they must have set there for 40+ years without anyone ever going inside them open to the elements etc.

it wouldnt suprise me if everyone who worked at the airfield werent even aware they existed

It sounds like a good idea, but then you see them and it is just some concrete and tarmac.

While it has historical significance, is it going to be used for anything? Visited by people? Presumably there is some cost involved to stop them being overgrown.

I guess similar to other war-time structures like bunkers and things like that. I don't know if (m)any of these have been listed.

Supurb idea. The cold war took up most of 1 half of the 20th Century and the events although still recent are already fading in peoples memories. I often find preserved Cold War sites cold, harsh, utilitarian places but remarkably emotive. M.A.D. such a suitable abreviation for a frightening time.

As an aside, a great museum to visit is the is the National Cold War Exhibition at RAF Cosford. It's very eerie standing next to a Yellow Sun bomb and think what it could do when it had it's warhead in the sixties and then you see the Thor ICMB and think oh **** :)

Great idea, but only if their preservation is supported by some sort of re-purposing plan. Otherwise they'll just crumble away or be a sink on the public purse. I suspect these would make great museums that could cover the whole cold war. If you ever get the chance go and visit one of the nuclear "regional seat of goverment" bunkers (RSG). The one in Scotland is a private musem and is quite frankly fantastic. Really brings home the horror of nuclear warfare. Is also a great opportunity to take a picture of a large road sign saying "Secret nucelar bunker this way", always make me chuckle.

Britain turning into a history theme park. Silly idea!!

It's worth considering that if these sites were not protected, they'd be bulldozed and no doubt an out of town retail park or a load of over priced houses chucked up. At least this way we stand a chance of educating future generations about our past and hopefully learning from it. Alternatively we could all just go shopping in a new Tesco.
