Hi

I thought I was gonna upgrade my gfx card so I could get better fps playing Counter Strike, but was told that I would only get 60fps if my monitor (Samsung Syncmaster P2450) was 60hz, which it is.

Therefore I want to get a 24" 120hz monitor. I have a HD4650 gfx card (cheapy) with DVI outs...

I really am sure of what to choose after looking around.

Some monitors look good but only have a 16:9 aspect ratio...

Any care to give me their opinion on what monitor would suit best.

Also heard that 120hz monitors are great for gaming, but not so good for normal desktop working...

your advice will be appreciated.

thanks

They are nice for desktop working. Because the cursor and animations are nice and smooth.

You lose out on usable area vs higher res though. But you don't get higher at 24" so don't worry about it.

I've just put an order for Samsung S23A700D from Overclockers (https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BG-131-SA). They sell B-Grade ones, but with guaranteed screens so it's probably a plainbox or cosmetic stand damage.

Your main pick is 120hz or IPS. There's a lot to be said between the two, more than I can explain or know myself. You really need to see them side by side to understand what's best. IPS will provide better colour gamut and 'screen quality' but 120hz will be better for animations fluidity.

After friends having both, and using both, I'm going for the 120hz. For context, I was an oldschool CS 840x640 on a CRT for years, so I try to get the best I possibly can for gaming.

Do you know if this one
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BG-122-SA
gives 120hz using the dvi-d port or is that only accessable using the display port???

thanks for the link of the monitor you bought, think I like the look of this one for £30 more...

whaddaya think?
I have this monitor, it's awesome. It does not have a DVI port though, only HDMI and DisplayPort. I think you have to use DP to get 120hz.

Will never go back to 60hz now, which is a shame as I really want a higher resolution.

I recently bought that monitor.

It arrived yesterday.

To use 3D you have to you use DP. The screen is very high quality and the 3D is also really good (this is the first time i've used 3D outside of the cinema).

I can't recommend that monitor enough. ATM if you don't want to get a B grade one, Overclockers is selling the monitor at 259.99 which is stupidly cheap if you compare to any othe website.

Isnt this where someone normaly pops up claiming the eye cant see more than 24 fps? or is it 34 now? *giggles*

Kidding aside i use to run on a LG W2363D 23 inch 1080p 120hz and it was pretty good. Can strongly recommend going 120hz even if your sitting doing desktop work like office or whatever, as everything is so smooth and fluid. Also Color accuracy was pretty good on the LG for a TN panel after you adjusted it.
