I have received my msi lightning 7970, so I popped out the current card a 5970 and replaced it with the 7970, before I did anything the pc detected new hardware and installed the display driver.

The image seemed big to me so I checked the resolution and its at 1900x1080

My native resolution is 2560x1440

But there is no option to choose my native resolutuion

I then uninstalled the drivers using driver remover to clean all traces of old driver and clean reinstalled the latest 7970 drivers, but still i cant select 2560x1440

What did i do wrong or what do i do?

I seem to recall that the 7970 lightning only has single link DVI- which doesn't support 2560 x 1440 if you are using a DVI monitor. You need a MDP to DVI adapter to get the full resolution. If you are using a Displayport monitor, then something is wrong.

Well im using a cable that previously worked with 2560x1440, I inserted the cable on both slots on the card and restarted, no success, still on 1080, shall I try using a vga to HDMI cable?

Im not to familiar with the different cables but I have a looked through the box and have:

mini DP to sl dvi active dongle
hdmi to dvi adapter
vga to dvi or somthing like that
mini dislpay port to what looks like a hard drive sata cable?

what shall i use?

Your old card probably had a dual link DVI socket. Your new one doesn't.

The only way is to go the DisplayPort route. You won't have the adaptor for it as they cost £70.

So it's either DisplayPort to DisplayPort or expensive adaptor time if your monitor doesn't have a DisplayPort output. Or send the card back and buy a different custom cooled 7970.

Ok, I have a Dell U2711 ultra sharp monitor, looking at the bottom of the monitor there are various connections, I assume it has the 2560x1440 connection?

But what about the HDMI cable, would that not work for my native resolution?

Dell UltraSharp U2711 27" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Midnight Grey
2560x1440 Resolution, 80000:1 Contrast Ratio, 350cd/m² Brightness, 6ms Response Time, 1x Component Input, 1x VGA Input, 1x DisplayPort Input, 2x DVI-D Input, 1x HDMI Input, Card Reader & USB Hub.

Buy a mini-display port to displayport cable, you could possibly have one in the box with the card.

HDMI won't work.

As I said above it's DisplayPort to DisplayPort or nothing. Your card has Mini DisplayPort so get a cable mentioned above if you haven't already.

You card only supports that resolution via DP.

Edit: edited to be clear that when I'm talking about DisplayPort I'm referring to mDP and DP.

My friend, How much is this cable cost, becuase with the card came a mini diplay port to sl dvi active dongle, is this what i need?

edit, just connected the above cable and this is giving me only 1600x1200, tops, Its silly to not have this type of connection on a top of the range 7970!

I think I can only return this, but i will experiment for a bit 1st.

bought the overclockers value port cable, received next day, now I can get a full 2560x1440 so Im happy with my 2nd and final 7970.

ps this card is huge! bigger that my 5970, I will think of getting a 2nd msi 7970 lightning but looking on my mobo slots, it will be a very tight squeeze, so might have to unscrew the extra back plate and get rid of that blue light thingy you get, somthing to do with voltage or overclocking the card.

temp are very cool, 40c right now and 60 during crysis2 with full hd extras and dx11 patch on ultra settings, I know adding a 2nd card on xfire will shoot the temps to around 90c as experienced with previous 7970xfire.
