ipad3 been hacked/taken control of?

Guys,
my boss came in this morning with an ipad3 and says that his wife was using it last night when it started opening up apps etc on its own. It then created a passcode and now she can't access it.
Is it possible that someone took remote control of it? can this be done?
Their home network is using WPA on the wifi SSID, so it at least has some security on it.
That said, she may have been using the 3g card not wifi.

Without knowing the passcode, can i do a hard reset to completely wipe it back to factory settings?

Thanks for any advice offered.
 
Dont see why you couldnt do a factory reset mate.

Just like you would do with the iphone or ipod's.
 
Joe, how do i do that please? I don't use apple products myself so not sure. I was told to hold down the power and home buttons till the apple logo comes on, but that doesn't seem to do anything, other than go to the passcode screen, which we obviously don't know.
 
1. Connect to their PC/Mac
2. Open iTunes
3. Click Restore

Wait for it to do its business and it will be back to factory fresh
 
After another phone call to her, she says she connected onto the free wifi at her son's tennis centre and after a while the ipad basically behaved as if it were being remotely controlled (the way i do with her pc at home when she's borked it up, using logmein). She says she 'saw' the settings page open up, data romaing being turned on, the passcode being turned on, then a passcode being entered.

I can't find any info at all regarding remotely controlling an ipad3 this way.
Do we all think she's covering something up?

If it were possible to hack a iPad in this manner we would have heard about it before hand.

More plausible if jailbroken, however not jailbroken? Not a chance.
 
That's complete rubbish. She's just put a pass code on it, probably by trying to connect to wifi.

Just restore it and nod along.

You'll have to put it into recovery mode to do it because of the pass code though.

I'll let the MD know that "it's not possible to remotely control the ipad". I'll raise my eyebrows, offer a knowing smile and leave him to his thoughts......of what his wife may have been doing! :)

It'll only be her being a woman.
 
The passcode is to protect the data not the iPad itself so an easy restore could solve this, though you would lose the data. Also, the only way this would happen is if the device was jailbroken and it had some questionable things installed.

You shouldn't trust the absoluteness of some people's replies. The real answer is that it is very unlikely, but certainly not impossible.

For most people, if they lock themselves out of something they just ask for help not make up some story. At most they are purposely vague and feign ignorance.

And as for being a woman, instead of interpreting that as some sort of technical red flag in my experience women are more likely to just straight up admit they did something. It's the guys who make stuff up.

So what you should do is factory reset the iPad to resolve the issue and give the MD the true answer that it is not impossible but highly unlikely. There is no need for you to imply that his wife is the questionable/faulty party. He can connect those dots himself if he chooses to, he doesn't need anybody to do it for him and I doubt he would appreciate it anyway.
