Hi,

I got an Asus xonar DG today and installed it without trouble. I mainly got it for the headphone amp and the fact that it had the front panel audio connector. Well that and it was cheap too :p

Anyway, it is working perfectly, sound is great, much better than the onboard audio and I was very happy until I plugged my headphones into the front panel. Everything sounds awful. It sounds like there is an underwater effect been put on the sound.

I installed the unified drivers to see if that would help, but no difference. When I plug the headphones into the rear of the computer the sound is perfect. It's only when i use the front audio panel that the sound goes bad.

In music instruments are really loud but voice is really quiet. There is no directionality in the sound, like in one song i know there is a guitar section that starts on the right before moving over to the left. but when i listen using the front panel the sound is just in the middle all the time. And over everything there is this echo effect like the music is been played down a well or something. Just in case I checked the effect settings in the Asus control panel but everything was turned off.

Has anyone else had this problem with the Xonar DG? IS it better to use the ac97 or the hd audio connector to connect to the xonar?

IT's really annoying because I wanted to use the front and rear connections and be able to switch between them easily.

I have the Xonar DG.

I've not had that problem with the front connector headphones. I use the front panel all the time too.

I used the HD Audio connector with the DG.

Thanks for the reply. I have since uninstalled it and tried the onboard audio connected to the front panel and it sounds no different than connecting it to the rear panel. Then I removed the realtek audio driver, disabled it in the bios and reinstalled the xonar DG, it does the same thing as before, connected to the rear panel fine, connected to the front panel underwater audio at it's finest!!

So annoying!!

Strange. I have all my on board drivers installed and onboard in enabled. Just as a back up.

Not really sure what could be causing it, other than a faulty DG.

Have u tried the DG in another computer?

I don't have another computer at the moment. Was sort of hoping that someone here might have had a similar problem and solved it. There are a lot DGs out there!!

silly question, but have you connected the front panel header to the soundcard itself and not to the mobo.

It sounds like it's playing through the on-board audio.

Eh guys, thanks for the replies but, come on!! read the thread!! If I had it connected to the motherboard I wouldn't have got any sound at all, because I disabled the onboard audio and removed the drivers.

And I also said that when I use the onboard audio there is no difference in sound quality between plugging the headphones into the front or the rear panels.

The front panel IS connected to the asus dg. And it still sounds like the sound is come from down a well or something.

I might try the ac97 connection and see does that work better.

Ok I have tried both the HD audio and the ac97 connectors and there is no difference. When I do a speaker test with the headphones connected to the front panel I get both the right and left test tones coming out both sides. ie when she says "left speaker" the sound comes out both speakers, and when she says "right speaker" it comes out both sides as well.

When I do the same test with the headphones plugged into the rear panel, the right speaker test comes out the right side and the left speaker test comes out the left side.

I think I will just have to use the headphones plugged into the rear panel. It's just a pain having to get up and switch between speakers and headphones all the time. It's the reason I brought the card so I wouldnt have to do that anymore!!
