ASUS MATRIX HD 7970 Platinum Video Card Review

Impressive on air @ 1.2v that is for sure.

The first batch of cards in Feb were good for the same clocks @ 1.3v but that was under-water.

I would not invest in one of these big boys now though, the refresh is 3-4 months away.

Interesting AMD don't seem to have "electro-migration" worries with their GPU's :D

Asus has done a nice job on memory cooling on this card, but still like to see that big cooler supported a little better.

The bickering however is becoming childish and moronic tbh, and is just about pushing me to the point of no return.:(

ha ha.... and you cant blame me can you :)

the trouble with this card is time is slipping by quite fast and something new will probably be comming out next summer, it looks like to me that buying an expensive card right now is too late in the day, i'd either get a cheaper 7970 or save and wait till next May..

unless of course you really do need it, there's always this

It does not always work that way.

When the HD 5970 came out I bought the reference versions with 1gb of vram per GPU. These days they can struggle with the memory limitation.

The people who bought the non reference versions with 2gb of vram per GPU are still getting good use out of their cards.

The used price of the 4GB (2x2GB) 5970's reflects this too, still floating around the £250 mark.

We don't know what the next gen will bring (8000 series should be due sometime in the next 6 months at a guess) but for gaming purposes there isn't much from this gens top line that can't handle max settings @ 60fps on a 1080 monitor. The next gen will probably benefit those with higher resolution monitors more so.

Sorry to derail (again). Anyone who wants a template for excel graphs, let me know via trust and how many games you will be benching. :)

No.

So back on topic - did you pay over the odds for it 8 Pack or was it reasonable? The card looks tasty to be fair.

Only a Lightning 680 will have a chance of keeping up if at all if the overclocks are reaching north of 1300 MHz as standard.

Can you imagine how many of these things would have sold had they been available say 3-4 months ago when the Lightnings were flying out the door at a fairly significant price premium over a reference 7970? :)

Hmmmm. Don't know. Perhaps yours was clocked too high and throttling back? Or were you seeing performance increase all the way up to those clocks?

No mate I paid very little.

Possible replacement for my GTX580 Matrix Platinum. Seriously crazy card! It's a shame that GPU Tweak sucks though, i had no choice but to use it with my current Matrix Platinum because of the bespoke fan controller...

The latest Beta version is certainly much better mate.

Wont be the fastest stock 7970 for long, the 7970 lightning BE will be landing in a couple of weeks, with a 1150 boost clock, depends how the thing overclocks though, arn't the newer tahiti chips meant to be better??

Haven't true any new versions in the past 2 months so will give it a go. I'm still on the original version, all others I tried still had an annoying bug where it synced the Overclockers with my GT520 I have for extra screens... Lol!! The sync cards would be disabled but would apply anyway.. doesn't end well. The original was the only one that worked for me.

If the bugs are gone then I'm happy getting the 7970 Matrix.
