My girlfriend is Type 1 diabetic which means she has to renew her license after her first years.

She has only just realise it expired about a month ago and will be coming back home at the weekend. If she sends her license off on monday morning will she still be okay to drive or will there be any consequences if she does.

Surely, until such time as they actually receive her license renewal, she's going to be unlicensed, & there fore uninsured as well, if i was her, i wouldn't drive till the end of the week to give them time to receive it & update there database.

Once the licence is applied for the dvla will give a grace period whilst the nessescary checks are performed (doctor, consultant, optician) she will still be able to drive during this period and the dvla will send a letter to confirm if you ask for it.
I recently applied for my new licence (also type 1) and had the same thing.
If she has no problems with the application then a new 3 year licence would be approved and sent out.
It does involve confusing paperwork though!

If it's anything like the photocard expiring problem, it's a bit of a grey area...

Your photocard expires after 10 years, not the licence. So you're still entitled to drive, but getting caught without a photocard nets you a £1000 fine. As soon as you sling the renewal form into the postbox though, you're able to drive again. I wonder if the same exemption applies here - as in "once the form has been sent off, you're allowed to drive again"? It's worth looking carefully over - ring the DVLA if you can't make sense of their website (which is likely...)

I had this, merilly went on with life thinking I'd done the renewal when I hadn't, called DVLA when a mate pointed out that my license was years out of date and had actually only been valid for a month (thought I'd renewed the photo at the same time as a change of address), DVLA stated that I was still licensed to drive and that it was very unlikely to cause any issues once I'd put into motion getting it sorted, in fact the gent I was speaking to said I'd have to be unlucky to get anything more than a warning even if I'd not noticed it.

My concern is as this is a short period license due to a medical condition that the usual renewal process as it also requires a different set of forms.

We aint talking about a tax disc that has slipped a few days over, her entire license has expired. I wouldn't want to be getting caught in that position :o

Thanks for all the answers, she won't be driving till its sorted. I can take her anywhere that isn't within walking distance to save any comebacks
