Hi guys,

I think I've decided to hand braid my cables for my entire PC, but I'm not sure exactly what I need, and tools etc..?

I've got the Corsair AX850, which thankfully is 100% fully modular, also about 5 SATAs and a few additional molex wires, so I'm looking for some kind of idea how much cable sleeving I need, and what tools or other items, so please can someone give me an idea of everything as I want to order from a famous german company in one go, unless they don't sell something I need?

Thanks :)

(PS: its for my water cooling project that's coming up shortly)

You will need a set of molex tools to be able to take cables out of the plugs.

plus obviously your braid and heat shrink for the ends, you will also need a heat gun or something like that to shrink the heat shrink ends.

3-4 mm is what they say for single cables there is a stinky on braiding kicking about.

could you pm the new of that german company mate? Im about to do this myself and want to check out all my options first before I place any orders.

mdpc sell everything you need.

Sleeve, Heatshrink, Molex pin remover. If you want a cheaper option you can use paracord from eBay etc. Go see the guides by Lutro0 on overclock.net, he has very helpful stuff and works to a very high standard.

Thanks for the links, I'll read up in the morrow :)

received mate

I think we have found a winner...I shall be sending some euros to germany for titanium grey :-)

thanks for the link

Sweet, I'll be getting Magic B me thinks

paracord is awful, it frays easily. The links provided to overclock.net are excellent. If you're going to do a professional job then don't skimp on the tools/cutters etc ;)

lamptron molex tool on the bay will do you find for extracting the cables.

You do have to be abit more careful with paracord - but wrapping the pins before you thread them will stop any snags.
It's also very important how you seal the ends - melt about 9-7mm of the end - then thread on the end of a pencil (to get a good 'melt' ring)

The mdpc braid makes threading and sealing the ends almost foolproof due to it's design.

I used a staple (filed to resemble a chisel) and a safety pin.
The first few are a pita but once you get the knack it's easy.

A lighter is also fine - or even the gf's hairdryer.

Also you don't 'need' heatshrink - it can be done with split rings or just melting the braid to the pin (hidden inside the molex plug)

Thanks Shadow, so just the main extractor tool that Nils sells will be enough for all my needs? (I'm creatively challenged so I need all the help I can get :D)

I'm assuming as well that sata data cables don't get removed, you just slide the braid over the connector?

Ah, so wifey's hairdryer will do, no need for heat gun, saves a few £'s :)

i think its brilliant stuff - the finish is lovely - just need to be a bit more careful than normal sleeve

Correct, you just work the sleeve over the sata cable

hairdryer is fine mate, thats what i use :)

All i bought was....

1. Molex pin remover (dual ended for the 2 different sizes)

1. Pin extractor for the 24 pin/PCI-e/P4 connector

1. Heatgun (even the lower end ones are fine for this aslong as you have adjustment for the heat levels)

5m of various sized heatshrink tubing, mostly used 3 and 5 mm however

25m of braiding, again, montly 3mm, this was perfect for single wires, think it was 5 or 7 mm for larger wires.

All i braided was the 24 pin, P4 and 1 molex wire from the PSU. All fan wires, temperature probes etc were also braided. This probably was a 10-15 hr job in all honesty. It looks amazing (pictures will follow soon in another thred) but i wouldnt do it again due to the sheer time investment.

I didnt use a hairdryer as i found it took too long to heat up. When you're doing over 100 shrinks time is all important.

I'll ask the same question in here as my other thread as more have replied in this one :)

Can anyone let me have links to vids or guides that show how to braid SATA POWER cables, especially ones that have multiple connections on one cable?

Cheers all :)
