I'm looking for areas to focus on and areas to avoid, never lived or spent much time down in London.

I would be commuting to Oxford Circus, where do I live (in a flatshare type place)? Ideally I would like the budget to be low, 700pcm at the top-end? I know if I live further out, savings are negated by transport costs.

Saw the other recent thread about a new graduate moving to London, was very helpful but focused a lot on the price.

You would be looking at a room in a houseshare or a box studio off a dodgy high street with that unfortunately.

A mate rents a big room in a house share in Chiswick for £495 all in. He works in central London and it takes around 40 mins on the tube.

Look for house shares on gumtree etc. You should be able to get a nice sized room, close to a underground station in a OK area.

Can live in Isle of Dogs / Canada water for that... with underground parking and 1 bedroom / living room and kitchen. IOD is a bit more expensive.

Comes with fantastic views of the wharf. Friend lives there and seemed quite quiet, obviously there's dodgy areas of it, but seemed mostly professionals.

Lived in Walthamstow for 6 months after uni with my ex, found a flat off the high street for 700pcm inc council tax, it was a tiny basement flat but would have been ok for one person. We looked at some others and my personal opinion is I would have rather house shared if it was just myself.

My uncle rents a 2 bed room apartment near Victoria station and he's paying like £1500. I don't think you could get a apartment for £700 in a "nice" area tbh.

better quit your job and sign on, I'm really thinking about doing that now, working in London does not pay.

Is that because you called a Policeman a pleb? :p

What about using airbnb.co.uk for a few weeks and find out if anyone at your new job has a room or suggestions?

You need to decide what you're actually looking for before asking for advice. You've not even said whether you want a room in a house/flat share or whether you're looking for a 1 bed/studio for yourself? Do you have a particular need to stay in North London, be on the tube map etc...?

I meant I'm interested in taking up a flat/house share because obviously it's expensive, but I have literally no idea where to live.

I do not know where I'm most likely to get stabbed/robbed, nicer areas etc. I would be commuting to Oxford Circus though; so 30mins, 1 hour to there seems reasonable on my budget.

At the moment it's hard for me to look at whats available because I don't know anything about the locations, whether they are good, mediocre, terrible etc. I'm prepared for something crappy though.

This answer for example, 'Ok area', I do not know any OK or BAD areas, I don't know anything about London.

£700 for a room in a flat share you can live in plenty of areas. Are you just worried about being mugged? Check the police crime maps for crime statistics...

30-mins to 1 hour.... well that's most places within zone 1, 2, 3....

You've not said anything about what you want in an area? Outdoor spaces? Or more inner city close to bars/clubs etc.. Do you need to be on a tube map?

London is a big place and tbh... the answer to where to get a flat share for 700 a month is pretty much 'anywhere'.

I have lived in east acton, ealing, leytonstone and romford. I had a friend who lived in canada water area and one that liked living in south london. If you are going to oxford circus I would probably recommend something on the central line. Either shepherds bush area or leyton/leytonstone area due to cost of a house share. But you could realy live in most place but those places you might get a big room for that price and have a decent place. It just depends on other factors and what you find. You can get anywhere in london in under an hour. If you want to go out to pubs and things. If you have any friends in london and so on.

I had a nice house share in east acton, close to the central and near to most things, had a big room and garden for like £500 excluding bills.
