I'd recommend Jeff Minter's Llamatron. You might need DOSBox, but that shouldn't detract you from a great Joystick shooter. The game principle is quite similar to Geometry Wars, both of which go all the way back to Robotron.

Geometry Wars is available for PC as well. But not much good with a joystick as you need one control stick to move your ship and the other to direct where you fire.

But yeah go ahead and play geometry wars that will probably look hilarious
