Has anyone drven one of these please?

They seem quite a lot of car for the money but I'm a bit concerned that it may be underpowered for the size of the engine or it might be the case that it feels quicker than it suggests on the road, any experiances please?

They're ok, but they excel at nothing.

They're 4 cylinder so you don't get the smoothness of a V6, only 170 bhp so not particularly powerful, and they're not particularly economical either.

If they did the Mazda 6 with a 2.0 turbo petrol with about 200BHP I'd have one in a heartbeat.

I was hoping I'd found a bit of a wildcard, like you say if it was 200BHP it would be a much more attractive option

Sigh, the hunt continues and theres always the Accord Type-S

Mondeo ST220 surely? Unless we are talking about the 2008 on shape Mazda6 (which we might be I guess, as IIRC the original had a 2.3 not a 2.5).

The 2.5 is only available on the new generation 6.

My friend has one and it's a very nice car. I've never driven it so I only has his words to go on but from what he says, it's got decent poke. It's not amazingly fast (not like the old MPS) but quick enough to confidently overtake when not on dual carriageways or motorways. However, he does say he prefers my Mondeo, cosmetically anyway.

As such, the Mondeo is an option if you are looking for cars that size. More importantly, the 2.5T has plenty of character.

Yeah Mazda 6 2007 on, its an 2.5 NA 4 cylinder 167BHP and its a 5 door hatch which I'd much prefer over a saloon it seems to come with a decent amount of kit for the money too and £8K will get a 2008 model from a main dealer

The 2.5T in the Mondeo is too much for me, I just dont need that kind of power and cant justify the running costs, I would just for for the Mazda 3 MPS if thats the sort of performance I was after I really want one but I'm trying to be sensible and in all honesty Fords just dont do it for me, I cant justify the reason just not a fan

Basing it solely on rated figures, the Mazda 6 2.5's 0-60 is quoted at 8.0secs with the Mondeo's being 7.3secs so not a massive difference and perfectly suited for the OP if he doesn't want the 2.5T. You could argue the Mazda's top speed is a lot less but I doubt anyone would go anywhere near that.

Short of me going to drag race my friend's Mazda, I think my statement was fair enough.

It's hard to imagine the engine in the mazda competing as an all rounder with the 2.5t unit though, 0-60 is only half the story. I've never driven it in a mondeo but in the focus it's a cracker. Ok the mondeo is a bigger and heavier but I can't imagine it's much less impressive whereas your average 2.5 litre na 4 pot is "decent"

The turbo is going to make it feel a lot quicker in the real world though regardless of 0-60 figures.

I'm not saying otherwise, I picked the Mondeo over the 6 for that very reason but if the OP doesn't want something as fast but doesn't want something slow either, there is nothing wrong with the Mazda. It's more than "adequate".

Actually thats quite a big difference and the top speed difference, whilst irrelevent, give us further clue that the Mondeo is the noticeably faster car.

If thats not a problem for the OP then thats cool but to say it isnt much slower would to me at least appear to be completely wrong.

I don't agree with you there. What I meant by "not a whole lot slower" is that the Mazda doesn't have some lethargic engine that would make it much worse than the Mondeo, i.e taking 8.5+ secs to go to 60 (again not a great measure but the only figure I can quote to make my point). But then it depends what you interpret a big/small difference to be.

Having been driven in a Mazda 6 and having my friend constantly trying to prove to me his car isn't much worse than mine, I have to admit that it does have some poke, enough for day to day driving at least. The Mondeo is arguably a more effortless drive but if the OP isn't a fan of it then the Mazda will suit his needs.

I own a 2.5 Mazda 6 Sport.

I came from a mazda 6 MPS.

The 2.5 Sport is very nimble, comfortable... the gear stick is snappy. The car feels fast enough for a family car... It's very similar to the ford mondeo 2.5 turbo which i have also driven... but because it is naturally aspirated, it feels smoother (at lower revs) but given some throttle is more fun and engaging... if you like to change gears, this is a great car for that... The mazda is extremely fun to drive around narly english winding roads regardless of the fact its huge.

The car is not great for cruising as it is touchy with the wind and requires constant adjustment of the steering.

The wheel gives you fantastic feel for the road over and above the Ford Mondeo... and the firm steering is perfect for carving. The ride is firm but acceptably comfortable for passengers. The interior is relatively good quality but the mondeo is far greater in this aspect.

The car feels quite light considering the size.. this is another positive over the ford mondeo which feels heavy at times...

Overall, great car... it's not a cruiser, it's set up to be sporty.. it's not fast.. but neither is the ford mondeo 2.5...
If you are looking for fun, get the mazda... if you are looking for a refined classy cruiser, get the mondeo.
If you are looking for speed.. get a Mazda 6 MPS.

Don't get me wrong.. 0-60 in shy of 8.0 seconds is good, but @ 6.5 seconds for an MPS.. now that was a cracker.. It says 8.0 seconds but you'll get it quicker than that once you work out how forgiving the clutch is.

P.S i wasnt kidding about the gear stick... it's fantastic.

P.S
tyres cost around 160 -185,
mpg is around 26 - 30 driving it hard,
if you drive normal youll get 34 - 36 no probs. so relatively efficient compared to the mondeo.
a tank costs me £80 with v-power. and makes a huge difference over BP 97.
the 2008 model is faster than the 2009+ so make sure you get the earlier version.
The car with traction control off is a hell of a lot of fun too and it seems to pull the back out just where you would want it to... the car is well balanced in terms of fwd yaw. The cars traction control is epicly ****
and will confuse you massively if you start to oversteer an understeer... It feels like you're hopping on a raging bull. left right left right.. DSC.. MAKE UP YOUR MIND.

Heated seats are rad in the car and save you from piles... doesn't have gps and all that **** so you can put a proper nav in that actually knows where mcdonalds is.

P.S, i'm selling my Mazda 6 2.5 2008 if you're interested for £7,500 o.n.o @ 47k miles with full service history. gnna get me an RX8 R3... Here is a video of it. http://youtu.be/lgA-TBxANlo

Thats really informative, thank you, good to know you came from a much quicker car too

I'm really pleased to hear that its a good handler, I'm much more interested in that than I am straight line perfomance and I do like a slick gear change, I dont do major motorway miles so the fact that it isnt a cruiser is no issue for me

I didnt know it had heated seats, thats another bonus, MPG is fine. I could do with a full kit list?

I need to sell my car first and ideally want to PX at a main dealer, why are you selling up is too slow and you've gotten bored?

Selling because I want a rear wheel drive car.. As much as fwd can be fun in the "i'm going to die kind of way".. a rear wheel drive is where i currently want to be and i'm looking to be closer to the ground too.
