So I am playing Phoenix HD (incidentally such an addictive yet simple game) on the iPhone and it reminded me of the days when I used to play side scrolling and top down shoot em ups such as TwinBee, Pop n TwinBee, Nemesis/Gradius, Salamander, Super Aleste, Ikaruga (sp?), and all the greats.

Thing is I never really invested much time in these games and would like to know about the more "frantic and manic" type of shoot em up games that have graced many consoles over the past decades.

What are your favourites?

DoDonpachi Resurrection is a good one. Made by CAVE so as manic as you can get, pretty cheap on the XBOX 360. Also Deathsmiles and Akai Katana also by CAVE are other good shooters although these are horizontal shooters like gradius etc.

Mushihimesama is probably my all time favorite Vertical shooter though. This was only released in Japan but fortunately is Region free so can be played on a PAL 360

Touhou Project series on PC. :p

Long running bullet hell series and always has some great music.

Don't forget about the Raiden series too.

I hope one day we see a Gradius VI. V was pretty awesome on the PS2 and it's been too long since we had a main numbered one.

All the new CAVE releases are only available for the 360. They previously released their games on the PS2 although they were also only released in the Japanese region and can fetch a good bit of money today.

My favourite Shmup is Zero Gunner 2 on the Dream Cast.

As for there ever being a Gradius VI, we can live in hope. Gradius V is epic on PS2.

I never played Gradius after the third one.... :(

Are 4 and 5 on the PS2? Is there a Gradius Compliation out there?

Gradius 3 and 4 is one collection on PS2 and Gradius V is by itself. There are loads of great Shmups out on PS2. I've got a fair whack of em as I do get into the mood every now and then to just sit and play em.

Not really a shoot em up fan but I did enjoy some and Phoenix was one of them as I remember playing that quite often at a pub in the early eighties.

To pick a favourite I recall being most impressed with Einhander on the Playstation 1, it had everything, graphics, sound and gameplay.
In my opinion it never got the recognition it deserved but to me it will always be an epic shoot em up.

There are few very good shmups on 360 some already recommended above, my favorites are (all made by Cave):
Dodonpachi Resurrection,
Deathsmiles - Deluxe Edition,
Akai Katana,
Espgaluda II - no Pal release but the standard NTSC-J edition is region free so you can play it on any Xbox 360,
Mushihimesama Futari - same as above, NTSC-J edition but region free,
Muchi Muchi Pork! & Pink Sweets - same as above, NTSC-J edition but region free,

Some of those games are very hard or expensive to get, especially the region free NTSC-J games. All Cave Pal games are very cheap which is a good thing.

Zero Gunner 2 is coming to Pal consoles soon too.

There are few Xbox live shmups too, some very good ones like Ikaruga, Radiant Silvergun or Sine Mora etc.

If you wanna play shmups then get Xbox 360 as this is the console of this gen where all best shmups are.
