Just recommended this to a friend who wants a super-duper rig. Always been a huge fan of the twin froz setups.

Is this a good 7970? Is it quiet, and will it OC well?

Yes, yes, and depends on the chip but generally, yes

It's a good card. Got one myself, new, but holding up well.

Smells a bit, but it's still new and temps are fine so it's probably just 'new' smell.

Will just add that the boost edition of the lightning should be here in about 2 weeks, so i've been told. Maybe worth holding out for that.

At the moment I might have been tempted by the Asus Matrix at the same price, sure you lose the MSI customer care but you do gain a speed binned CPU on the Matirx (a chip that's a proven to produce high clocks) where as it's lucky dip where the lighting is concerned. Still I would be happy with either card.
