Will 3D Vision last another 12 months?

Looking at the latest beta drivers that came out a couple of days back, hardly any of the titles are listed as 3D Vision ready. Being a 3D Vision 2 owner myself, I can only think of one game that I really like in 3D, and that's Batman AC. Can honestly say I don't play anything else in 3D.

Will it last much longer? Hardly any of the studios seem to be bothered about supporting it, but it seems like Nvidia ploughed so much money into the tech, that they need to keep throwing buckets of water out of the sinking boat in the hope they can keep it afloat.

One of the biggest games coming out this Xmas, not even supported. All the rest, fair, or good (good is still pants, with objects not rendering at the right depth giving you an instant headache) Only one game is listed as 3D vision ready.

Assassin's Creed III - Rated Not Recommended
Bloody Good Time - Rated Good
Bullet Run - Rated Fair
Call of Duty Black Ops 2 - Rated Good
Carrier Command: Gaea Mission - Rated 3D Vision Ready
Dark Souls - Rated Fair
Dishonored - Rated Fair
FIFA 13 - Rated Good
Hitman: Absolution - Rated Fair
I Am Alive - Rated Fair
MLB 2K12 - Rated Fair
NBA 2K12 - Rated Good
Need for Speed: Most Wanted - Rated Fair
Sniper Elite V2 - Rated Poor
Tiny Troopers - Rated Fair
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD - Rated Good
Total War Battles: SHOGUN - Rated Good
XCOM: Enemy Unknown - Rated Fair

2 of those games on that list I play (Dishonored/Sniper Elite V2) and find them to be very good. I have seen the odd shape on Sniper Elite but nothing that bothers me...Maybe I am just easily pleased.

All in all from my perspective, I love it.

Lol. Perhaps I am too picky then. 2 mins of Sleeping Dogs placement markers being at the wrong depth and I'm back to 2D

I know what you mean but generally with patches and drivers, they get those kind of bugs sorted out. I am not defending Nvidia in any way, as prices are a joke. I play in 3D surround, so maybe that helps me ignore the minor glitches :)

The 3D profiles usually improve with time, just like any other part of the drivers, some games are even being retro fitted with 3D, Doom BFG is rated "Excellent" for example.

I thought Crysis 2 and Portal 2 were stunning in 3D. Each to their own though. I would agree that Batman was the best 3D game.

Since 3D is still such a massive craze with regards to TV and cinema etc, I would be inclined to believe that it will continue to be supported. Early drivers aren't really a good indication of a lack of support as 3D vision wouldn't be the dev's top priority for new releases. Just like 3-way and 4-way crossfire/SLI: drivers suck at first and then improve.

Not many do, it's up to Nvidia/Tridef driver teams to sort it out, some titles take longer than others, partly down to being very 3D unfriendly.

Hopefully things will change with W8 and titles have better support, but that's going to take time.

3D vision is and will be going strong for a long time.

+1

I don't think I'd be gaming much without 3D(Tridef) as it has completely re-invigorated my gaming.

Does Nvidia 3D work 'with' the ingame option in BFG or would/do you disable the ingame 3D and use Nvidia 3D instead?

A question for the owners of 3D monitors...

Only place I've ever seen one is in a local store running an nVidia demo on loop. The store is obviously much brighter than any home environment, but I found that when I put the glasses on the light from the monitor getting thru was incredibly dim - annoyingly so. I'm not one of these people that likes their displays in retina-burn mode either.

To people who have them at home - are they bright enough?

I recently decided that playing games on a nice 2560x1440 IPS would be preferable to a 3D TN, but there's space on the desk for another monitor at some point....

I use 3D Vision 2 which is bright. The monitors I have uses a technology called 'Lightboost' which takes away the darkness that can be seen from Nvidia 3D Vision. My moan with my Brothers and mates systems was how dark it looked and ghosting was showing. The ghosting was probably down to the monitors display time though.

As tommybhoy said a lot of developers just don't bother with developing their products with 3D in mind and would rather just leave it to nVidia, AMD, the people behind tridef etc. to try and hack support up for their games.

In terms of brightness I've found both the Samsung 2233rz and BenQ XL2420T (3D Vision 2.0) are both more than bright enough in a home setting. Personally I'd agree tho that unless your playing fast paced FPS games (where you wouldn't want 3D Vision anyhow) overall you get a better experience going for a nice high resolution good quality panel. Stereo 3D is a great effect and all but IMO for every day playing it just lacks convenience and feels a bit more restrictive when your playing a game when it comes to taking in whats going on and reacting to it.

@csin,

a bright environment won't have helped, 3D needs a dark environment for best effect.

@Gregster,

was that passive 3D your talking about?

I recently found out that 3D vision 2 uses the same rendering technique that's used on the Sammy active 3D 120Hz monitors/glasses.

The Sammy loses very little brightness and I thought it was blown out of proportion in general, but if it was passive that you used, then that would explain it(from my point of view) and would be handy to know for future reference.

:)

@manju,

Are you still using the Sammy with Nvidia and did you get the 3Dvision kit if you are?

Thanks greg, having only used my setup for gaming, it's good to know that I'm not missing out in the 'lightboost' per se. :)

Really should be a 3D gaming thread in here as there is not much known about it, hopefully I can get a bit of time in the next couple of days to put one together, but I don't have any experience with 3D vision, so somebody's going to have to be quoted in the op.:):D

On another note, I think I have to put more consideration into the fact that titles are not 100% rendered correctly in 3D too(in regards to informing for help/advice on new adopters), as like yourself, I'm not a stickler for these things.

If it works and gives you a pop out effect, then I'm more than happy, where as some don't like the fact for example that certain shadows are skipped-because they simply can't be rendered in 3D due to the way the codes written for individual(optimised) game engines.

I am a noob where it comes to 3D Tommy but can comment on my experiences. There is so many factors that need to be considered in 3D from games. I expect the odd hash up but wouldn't accept much of it. I am picky but not to a point of moaning. I have completed Trine 2 so many times and can't find a fault with it, same as Portal 2 and a few others.

I find some games/sims don't work well and like Rroff, I wouldn't play a fps MP in 3D. I find FSX to look poor in 3D but great on 3 monitors. I understand the basic principles of 3D and when it is dark it looks poor but it does still have a good 3D effect. I guess while most people play on a 1080P monitor 60Hz, we get pushed to the back of priorites on strict deadlines. The same thing with SLI/CF support, the minority gets pushed to the back of the queue and worry about us with patches and driver releases after release.

I have read up as much as I can on 3D but there is so limited info and generally what I do read is BS from biased reviewers (like me).
