do we need a 'Thanks' and 'Thumbsup/Thumbsdown' system?

so, would it be useful to have a thumbs up/down button and a thanks button on these forums?

the thanks button on AVforums is used for saying thanks to helpful members and anything funny.

would be much easier than quoting just to say lol or :) etc.

do it via ajax too (instant) and not some god awful form submit system like http://www.theregister.co.uk/

heavily downvoted posts could make the poster sit in a naughty corner for a week or something. helpful members get a free gizmo from OCUK at xmas? funniest poster get something too?

these forums feel so 1990s sometimes.... which isnt always a bad thing but we can move forward without too much web2.0 diarrhoea

Seems pointless to me. For things that actually involve being able to rely on a member, that's what the trust rating is for.

Anything else just seems un-needed.

Could we also get a few hundred extra smilies to use and custom avatars and unlimited signatures and a whole load of other crap?

Hell, why don't we just migrate OcUK forums to ProBoards? :D

No need. If you generally want to thank someone then take the 20 seconds to post a reply saying thank you or send a message through trust. Taking a millisecond to click a thumbs up doesn't seem particularly sincere to me.

Thank You :)

The thanks system on most forums I've seen just becomes an e-peen competition. To the point where members with little or no rep/thanks, even the new members get ignored or mocked by the guys that just thank each other constantly.

Thumbs up :D

Already a lot of e-peen here as is, no need to add more.

Nope, will turn into an unpopularity contest where we can stalk each other and constantly dislike posts till we end up in a childish anarchy...

I think it could be a really nice thing to have on here however only if implemented properly.

To answer the question though no, we don't need it.
