Windows 8 who's buying/upgrading

Anyone know if the upgrade has intelligent options. By this I mean is it able to do an upgrade by remove existing apps. Really I suppose I'm asking if it can simply detect a version of Windows 7 installed and then blat it during the upgrade so it's like a fresh install.

Just bought a Sony Z which I can get the Win8 upgrade for, for only £15. Very good lap but less installed with all the crap that's installed and a few difficulties I've had removing some of it. Even had to restore to previous restore points although once was down to me removing something that was required. Anyway, I feel the OS install is a bit flaky and even bloated still and think an upgrade will make things worse if it tries to carry all the software forward into Win8.

when you upgrade the only options it give you are if you want to check for updates whilst upgrading.

Did mine last night. keeps everything exactly the same

From Windows 7 you should have 3 options:

1. Upgrade and retain your existing applications and documents
2. Upgrade and retain your files and documents
3. New install, nothing retained

The upgrade (1) is very robust and should work great for most people, with no performance issues. If you later find you would have preferred a clean install for whatever reason, you can do a Reset from within Windows 8 itself. Typically takes less than 20 mins and you'll have a fresh machine.

Just running the trial version now; does it take awhile to sync everything together? I've clicked 'add an account' as I'd like to see my Twitter/Facebook stuff on there but it's saying all the available accounts have been added?

Preview or Enterprise Trial?

I had lots of problems with syncing accounts on the previews. The apps have now been updated on the RTM which would cover the Enterprise trial if that's what you're running.

I finally caved in and decided to go for the cheaper download option (if the download servers can keep up under pressure, I should be able to get the whole file downloaded in an hour or so) and there's a few things I'm wondering about (at least for my laptop since that's the only one getting an upgrade).

(software/drivers/BIOS updates): Most of the software (I've already updated power DVD to the latest version available), drivers and BIOS are the same as they were when I got the laptop, and I'm wondering if I should update those that I can before doing the upgrade (Acer does have it's own updating program, but it hasn't been doing much since I've seen it pop up in the system tray so it might be better if I run the updater program myself, although I'm not sure if it bases what needs to be updated on the list of drivers, BIOS and other software listed on the site since some haven't been updated on there since the laptop was originally released).

(backups): I'd created a set of recovery discs for the whole operating system when I got the laptop, but I'm wondering if I should also create a backup that just contains the software and drivers that came with it (there is an option in the program used to create the recovery media to do this). I'm already planning to backup all of my personal files just in case something goes wrong during the upgrade.

(hard drive space): I know this probably isn't necessary since I'll be able to move all the programs I currently have installed to windows 8, but should I remove some of the programs I have installed to free up some space (I do have enough space at the moment, but some of the reasons I want to do that is because I want to see how some of the games I have will react in windows 8 starting with installing, although I think that I'd get more space back after the upgrade has been done), although I do want to remove comodo internet security as it has become a real pain in my neck (and will probably be the biggest pain to remove since I heard that it leaves the firewall driver behind).

I updated my mobo bios as it had windows 8 updates in it. Ultra Fast Boot and a few other plus piledriver support etc. Sotware everything worked but there were new mobo driver so i installed all of these.

Yes create them just incase. Backup everything possible and recovery discs.

Up to you. I left everything installed and all games worked perfectly including bitdefender 2013.

Are you talking about the download version for 25?

If so how did you buy it as from what i can see it is only available on the 26th...

wats every 1 getting now on the released version for WEI scores (i know its really a total waste of space just curious)

I used to get 7.9 for everything appart from CPU memory which was 7.4

In windows 8 I am now getting

CPU - 7.6
Memory - 7.6
Graphics - 8.1
Gaming Graphics - 8.1
Hard Drive 7.4

No point comparing it with Windows 7, they've change the calculations and scales with every OS - so you can't compare between versions.

But FWIW
CPU - 8.5
RAM - 8.5
Graphics - 8.2
Gaming - 8.2
Disk - 8.1

What does that tell you, cos for the life of me I don't know!? ;)

You didn't need WEI to tell you that though did you LOL :)

I just hope you're not OC'd cos I'm stock at the moment!!!

Anyway it's a single M4 256GB. It's got some other M4s in RAID0 as secondary drives, but they're not measured in WEI.

yeh i knew about teh cpu lol yeh its at stock.

WTF mine is a crucial M4 128GB why's my score so low???

windows 8 is too fast at booting now though I don't even see the option to enter bios :(

Capacity, free space, controller? Don't worry about it - you've said yourself WEI is a waste of space.

Are you running UEFI BIOS? Mine has and it uses the same logo for the BIOS and the W8 startup and you can barely tell as it goes from one to the other.
