I've been looking to get a MK5 Golf GTi, budget around £7-8k. Not been looking at the Edition 30 models as they are going for around £12k. Then this popped up in my search; http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/...agen-golf-mk5-gti-edition30-t-230-2008/837465
Is a Cat C but a substantial saving over the others.

I spoke to the owner who did the work on it a year ago and he said it had front and rear damage needing a new front wing and one headlight, new rear bumper, boot lid and one rear light. no photos of the damage.
Only 2 months left on the MOT and is happy to put it through now and let me have an AA vehicle inspection.

Worth it?

Its a bit hard to believe that damage would cause it to be recorded as a cat c tbh, especially given its still relatively new and valuable. If he fixed it why are there no photos of the damage? Id suggest as its a lot worse than he claims. I'd move on and go for a non recorded car

Sorry, should have made it clear. He Had the damage repaired but did it at a local garage not done himself

I can't see that new bumpers, a couple of headlights and a boot would be enough to write off a car that was probably valued around £14,000 to £15,000 at the time.

This is where i'm coming from - Cat C on a car of that value screams chassis damage to me, which on a relatively new car would make me run a mile

Hi there,

I bought my MK5 GTi this year about 6 months ago now and I love it!
I waited for a good one to pop up!

Definitely go for a well cared for low mileage example, make sure you've got the cash to run it though they are reliable but when things need replacing they aren't cheap!

I Paid 8.5K for mine with touchscreen CD Changer, Leathers, 280BHP, Milltek exhaust etc... Full Veedub service history and 50K Miles on an 05 plate!

Hope that helps!

Cat c includes the cost of hire too when writing off the car but still I wouldn't touch that, not with someone else's barge pole.

Considering how everyone just wants cheap when it comes to cars, selling a write off should be easy

Those seats

They are standard edition 30 seats. While there are a touch love/hate, they are extremely comfortable.

To the OP, I would probably avoid it unless you can see the invoices for repair, are happy with the work, and have it independently inspected. But personally I wouldn't buy it.

I would avoid it, just looking at the photos the back bumper appears to be sitting slightly higher than it should on the right (or the tailgate slightly lower) with a uneven line with the tailgate and the front number plate seems to be at an angle when it should be flat which at a guess this is due to the bumper not sitting properly.
