Loads of people, when the new gen hit all you heard was how overinflated and how outrageous the pricing is. Mainly people who want everything for nothing.
I personally was more than happy to shell out what they asked to get a shiny new toy. You wouldn't hear me complaining about prices
I think sometimes it's all too easy to slip into a midset where one can refer to 'the good old days'. People tend to remember the good 'bits' only.

They obviously don't know their graphics card history then!
I've never shelled out £400 for a graphics card because it's not really what I'm in to.
I'll usually get like the second top single GPU after they've dropped below £300.
Lately though, GPUs have been moving fairly slowly, and game requirements haven't really been going up so there's been very little need to upgrade outside of multidisplays.
Price for upgrade and what from may i ask?
I came from a Q6600 / X48T motherboard / 4gb ddr3 ram / Antec Skeleton case, to the rig in my sig. Iirc, it cost around £350 - 375. In previous upgrades, I'd spent too much on a motherboard / gpu and never got full use of the features. This time, I figured that I simply didn't need to spend that much. As long as I put the main focus on the cpu, I'd be satisfied.
To be honest, I could have left the ram as it was. Imo, 4gb of ddr 3 for my needs is adequate, though the deal on my new ram was peanuts, so pretty much a no brainer.

Im looking at the gaming bundles and they seem nice 400 for a decent one and pre overclocked.
But i don't get how they oc it then take the fan off the cpu? Seems like i could end up with a second had setup? I dunno why the fan doesn't come fitted with the ram?

You'd have a point if the current top end cards were 5000 heaven benchmark points but they are nowhere near that.
You'd have to have more money than sense to buy a gtx 680 or 7970 imo as you can beat those cards with sub £200 sli / xfire setups of course this will offend people but it's true.
We shant mention the gtx 690 prices then

It 'might' be cheaper for you to buy the parts individually, and then assemble / overclock yourself.

Yea...but the problem is, unlike back then the 8800GTX offered more than double the performance of the top-end card of the previous gen...how much faster is the GTX680/7970 comparing to the GTX580?I just had a peruse of old prices of Graphics cards and fondly remember the 8800GTX.
£400 back in Jan of 2007...We have always been paying through the nose for our shiny new toys

So it's not so much about poor "price", but more about poor "value".
If there's a £400 card that's double the performance of the GTX580, I wouldn't doubt they'd be flying off the shelf like the 8800GTX did XD

I agree and I bought the 8800GT which was an amazing card. It is still going strong but feel the lifetime warranty will not stand strong as it is with BFG. There was no valid point to this thread, only a reminder to ourselves of how much tech porn does cost/did cost. I remember seeing the price of the 680 and thinking "
"My system is the first time I have gone overboard on a build and generally sat in the middle with a decent but far from top performing computer. It stands the same now, where you could build a decent gaming computer for £500 or less that will last a fair while.
The BFG cards were expensive because they offered a lifetime warranty
