Heads UP - Office 2013 and Exchange 2013

Haha at this rate I'm never going to get on top of things. Exchange 2003 to 2013 migration will be interesting no doubt.

Have they finally killed off public folders?

That sounds like a good version to go to, a lot of the clients i work at are still on 2003. This means that we would have to skip 2007 and 2010. Only issue is application support. A lot of the applications only just supported 2010 and i think from the look of things 2013 is a big shift in terms of features. Trying to push everyone in to the cloud and to touching their screens and so on. Everyone is going to get saw arms touching their monitors or holding up tablets.

The setp up from 2003 to 2007 is huge. I for at least the next year 2010 will be the most likely version to upgrade to.

This rather clever chap says that it could potentially be foolish to upgrade to Exchange 2013 RTM, as SP1 for Exchange is usually considered "feature complete".

Don't forget Exchange 2010 won't install on Server 2012 until SP3 (for Exchange 2010) is out - that's not due until 1H 2013...

My timescale for deployment is still a bit fluid so I'll have to weigh up all the pros and cons then. It's still looking to be Q1 2013 though.

You guys have any plans on moving any servers to 2012 any time soon? Where i work most of the DC and forest and functional levels are still at 2003. one or two have 2000 functional level still.

I'm looking at creating a whole new HA domain, exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, Lync and MS CRM system in the next 18 months. That'll use server 2012 unless there is a requirement to use 2008 R2.

We have only just moved to exchange 2010. ha!

Exchange 2013 can't live alongside Exchange 2010 yet. It's 2013 or nothing (well, or don't ditch 2010). SP3 for Exchange 2010 is the fix

Having migrated a lot of places from 2003 to 2010 I can tell you MS release shoddy software regardless of waiting for SP1 or SP2. When SP1 came out it had lots of bugs and many updates later a lot were fixed. Some updates were pulled and rereleased multiple times!

SP2 also introduced new bugs which again slowly get fixed in updates which again have been getting pulled as they themselves are buggy. The latest UR4 for SP2 has been pulled and rereleased as UR 4v2 so Microsofts quality control hasn't improved!

Sometimes my job makes me a sad panda and I wish I never got involved with Exchange migration work :( Overall you may not see bugs but day in day out you come across lots of different installations and see the bugs you think WTF how did they not catch this!

No way would I go to 2013 straight away!

You haven't used Oracle software have you? Microsoft are saints compared to them.
