Found out this evening that somebody has used my details to buy themselves a macbook pro, a sony vaio and an ipod totalling nearly 2 grand!

They used my google wallet account (which is linked to my debit card) to pay, is it possible they could have got the details from my phone somehow? virus? malware? I'd just downloaded a game MYFC manager from the play store then about an hour later I'd noticed these transactions, they accessed my gmail account too, because after they flashed up on my phone they were deleted almost instantly, althought the transaction still show when i log into google wallet online.

I think 2 of them were declined, but the macbook one was processed so I've contacted google about it. Will head to the bank to cancel my debit card just to be safe, I did phone natwest but they wouldnt do anything because it was a debit card.

But it's bugging me how they got my google wallet details, is android an unsafe OS? or could they have got them from accessing my laptop?

What do you mean they wouldnt do anything about it because it was a debit card?

I missed that part of the post. Seems a little strange.

I had someone use my debit card details fraudulently (they tried to buy trainers and an ipad). Halifax sorted it all out very quickly. My card was automatically blocked for suspected fraudulent activity, and they blocked the transactions before the money came out of my account (it just sat there reserved for a few days).

I don't understand why Nat West "wouldn't do anything" - if you've been the victim of fraud then they're obliged to help... what exactly did they say to you?!

Sorry to hear you've been stung.

That sounds an appalling response though, perhaps NatWest are too busy dealing with the fallout from that cash without card scheme.

Basically they told me I'd have to wait for the transaction go be processed then take it up with their dispute team.

I'm going to my local branch today to try and get a better response from them, I wasn't too happy with the reply they gave me over the phone.

Wow which bank are you with? The other day I had to enter my card details for something linked to facebook and the second I did I had a text and a phone call from Santander to call the fraud department.

The money hasn't left tha bank yet, and so they can't raise a claim against something that hasn't taken effect. Visa transactions go through visa, and a bank cannot stop them before they leave, as this leaves the merchant vulnerable. Aslo the merchants need to be given an opportunity to carry out their own fraud checks as well and could cancel the transactions before they are claimed.
As soon as the transactions leave, your bank can raise a visa dispute/chargeback against the merchant, and normally your money willbe back within 24-48hours. Sadly this is not the banks fault, and I feel that you may haven't posted the full details of your call, which is why people think your being hard done by.

Going to the branch will not help you either, so my opinion will be save your time and hold tight. If you need to cancel your card, do it over the home. Job done.

Fingers crossed for a swift resolution for you, I fully understand this situation and it's not nice.

You’ve had time to calm down. The card should have been cancelled when you made your first call. I would ring them again this morning, ask for the fraud team. You will get your money back but just don’t get irate with them as they are there to help.

Man, I would hate for this to happen to me - thankfully my account rarely has enough in there for anyone to do any real damage!!

Cheers for the Macbook btw ;)

I was a victim of identity theft. I went out one evening and had a bit much to drink. Woke up the next morning and couldn't remember who I was :(

Could be a number of things

ATM that has been tampered with
Dodgy app (unlikley unless you d/l outside of google market)
Someone going through bins looking for old bills (always shred bills etc)
Computer virus
etc etc

You'll never know. Just change pin/passwords and carry on with life.

/End thread really!

The fanboys will say no, but just look at how often the news mentions Android viruses and dodgy apps.

For the love of God don't kick off...

I'm not sure how quickly your bank will respond, I remember having a problem with an online vendor for computer parts a few years back who turned out to be a scam artist. Barclays could not do anything for 30 days as it was a debit card, had it been a credit card they would have acted immediately.

That being said, my case may have been treated differently because whilst the issue was fraud, the transaction itself was authorised and completed by me rather than somebody else. Either way, you should contact your bank ASAFP and they will probably do something sharpish.
