7970 or 670?

I would drop the 7970 for the 7950 and use the saved money to swap the i5 for the i7 3770k as lately having more threads has helped in some gaming scenario's. If this is a sign of things to come it maybe a good move. My i7 920 is looking like a much better buy these days comparing with the i5 based chips of the time.

On the monitor front are you more interested in the 120Hz or image quality ? I use a Dell U2412M which is an IPS panel and the image quality is a big step up from a TN screen.

This is certainly true in benchmarks like 3dmark but not so true in gaming. There's a good reason why so many people here use the 3570k.

Thanks for the suggestion psychodil, that looks a good card in the region I am looking at.

Phage - how do you like your card? Would you say its worth the difference money wise? Monitor wise I don't really know tbh! I plan on playing a range of games from FPS to strategy so I am not sure which route suits me best.

TheRealDeal - I was wondering about that. Obviously I have read that the i5 is better for gaming but some people have suggested I get an i7 recently. Is it worth the extra money as I only intend to game?

In bf3 multiplayer using gtx680 sli there was gains to be had having an i7 over an i5. He says he want to crossfire eventually so i reckon the better processor will give him advantages here and there.

Thanks psychodil. Do you have experience of that?

No mate, but its pretty high upon this list and a very good price at the moment.

These people test all heatsinks pretty thoroughly.

My biggest bit of advice to you though, is to spend some time, read some reviews, and make informed decisions. Asking around on this forum will help. But when you are spending that sort of money, you dont want any regrets down the line. So dont rush into any purchase :)

I love my card, but I bought it a while ago and that HIS on special looks very good. At that price I'd look at the HIS first.

On a range of games ? I'd get a quality IPS panel, like the Dell which is cheaper than your choice, as the image quality is much much better and you can spend the rest on a bigger GPU ! If you're a hard-core FPS twitch-kill then you may appreciate a 120Hz screen, but it's not my thing at all.

Thanks psychodil, that does look a good option to save the £30!

Phage - I think you are right, I will look at that Dell and probably swap it in. I am not a hardcore FPS fan so as long as its a good quality for FPS I will get it!

Dell also have their excellent zero-dead-pixel warranty, and I think there are some specials on them. I saw one recently for £189.

The monitor you have chosen is decent and it's not just 3D which it has, it also runs at 120 Hz which in my view is a massive difference over 60 Hz :).

The Samsung 120 Hz monitors are also decent AFAIK.

ZOMG! I wish I had £1700 to splash on a new build!

Regarding the card, I'd go with a 7970 as it's as good as a 680 and costs a lot less.

Regarding the monitor, I'm not sure 120Hz is really worth it unless you have 2x 7970s or 680s as you will only push around 70FPS average in games like BF3 at Ultra. Also beware that the Dells have very aggressive anti-glare coating, which annoys some people.

kissenger - My existing pc is about 6years old so it's time to splash out!

It's hard to know what I want I guess without seeing the monitors in action. I was originally going to get a 27" monitor but plumped for the 24" due to the 120hz. Now if that isnt necessary I could be back to the 27"!
