A mechanic on watchdog..

Wow, just.. wow.

Some of the things they do on the car are odd though. I mean... a disconnected Lambda sensor? That must be the worlds rarest fault as there no reason why it would ever be simply not connected. It's therefore not exactly unreasonable to suspect that a Lambda sensor fault is a faulty sensor rather than a disconnected one.

Can't defend that rest mind :D

They always do this, last week they added a secondary ide hard disk to a computer and set it to master on the jumpers so the system wouldn't boot, old fella tells the pc tech that it had just got slower and slower until it would no longer boot, giving him absolutely no reason to suspect an incorrect jumper setting, the system would never have booted as they set it up.

I laughed at this too... not like a jumper can change positions over time. The guy was clearly not very good, but still most people here would miss that.

Why did Judges and Barristers pop into my head? :D

You clearly have a fetish for Ann Robinson on secret film wearing a Barristers hat, whilst being spanked by the pony tails?

You're a sick puppy.

Assumption is the mother of all disaster, but you would assume that the thing was working in the first place!

Oh look, this jumper is in the wrong place. I will just charge you tuppence for my time, trouble and knowledge.

It's another ****s trick.

Yes, assumption is, but given the old bloke's comments and absolutely no reason to suspect an incorrect jumper setting it was a very logical conclusion to draw.

It's like the one they did years ago, they pulled the gfx card out of the agp slot, now if that had been me I'd have been looking for the cameras from the off, they don't just fall out.

Sorry, going off topic for motors, he did have quite a nice car from what I recall though :)

I don't have any experience of IDE hard drives so it is hard for me to visualise this situtation.

Many tradesmen are self employed, times are hard.
I had a few slates missing and no one was interested because the job was too small.

Tradesmen may embroider the facts to get additional work. This is no a new thing, it has gone on since the dawn of man, however there is 'finding additional work' and there is downright fraud.

Assumption is a pain in the arse. I had a bicycle that I replaced the chain and cassette, whilst test riding it I was getting a clunk which is usually the bottom bracket bearing.

Customer agreed as it had play in it.....it was seized but I got it out. Threads were damaged so had to use a threadless BB.

Clicking still there.....I just thought FML. Turned out it was the freehub body in the rear wheel. Gave him a new rear wheel for free and I think we broke even at that which was enough for us and the customer to be happy. 99% of the time it would have been that part but not this time.

I learned from that and now have a spare wheel I use to test on tricky bikes.

First rule of PC repair club - tell no one else about the PC repair club
Second rule - remove peripherals one at a time until system boots, including CD/DVD drives and secondary hard drives.

It always seems to be 'working class' trades they single out though.

I stand to be corrected.

It's a bit easier to to set up a honey trap to see if a plumber/mechanic or other tradesman is ripping you off. Another matter to set up some kind of scheme to trap insider trading or crap surgeons.

"We removed both of this mans kidneys and he's dying - will the surgeon spot this in time, or will he go straight for the artificial hip replacement?"

Fuses can fail without a fault in the rest of the electrical system, they are the 'weak link' by design. Metal fatigues over time, especially if an electric current is passing through it.

Think of the filament in a bulb heating up & cooling down, but to a lesser extent.

Yep

Fuses , relays , connections

Always rule the simple things out before testing/replacing components

Easy to say in theory and often the case in things like lights and ciggy lighters etc. But have never ever in the history of working as a mechanic have I ever encountered a blown ABS or alternator fuse. Probably replaced hundreds of alternators and never even suspect the fuse as it simply is never the problem.

Guy was a douche but the tech guy should have introduced problems that actually occur in reality.

Surely you actually check the component before replacing though? Rather than saying "computer says no".

Voltmeter across the rear terminals to check output or a bosch ripple tester across the battery, those are the only checks on a alternator, both will come back as faulty if the fuse has been tampered with.

Blown alternator fuse / me having a threesome with kelly brook and carol vorderman. Both are equally as likely.

So you wouldn't check the fuse?

Never have. never needed to and never will. Have had alternators melt their way out of their housings, fry ECU's at 20v and try to set fire to engines and throughout it all the fuse will sit there happily.

If it quakes like a duck, walks like a duck and looks like a duck it isnt a moon.
