It shouldn't take nearly as long for the 8 series to mature because it's supposed to be on the same architecture as the 7 series isn't it?
5 to 6 series was just the chip layouts being rearranged on the 40nm process while the 7 series is something new on a new 28nm process that should still have some good space for improvement.
Same should apply for Kepler too really. There was very little AMD or nVidia could do with the 6XXX and 5XX series outside of small refinements and rearranging.
