Major Graphics Card Problems - HD 6950

Hi

I recently overclocked (by accident - sort of! lol) and then once I had reset the clock speeds (I OC'd to 840 / 1350 in a single go) because I realised I didn't go up in 5mhz (fked) .. the graphics card has been a really bitch lately.

It wont run BLR maxed anymore.. it just BSOD's me..

I've uninstalled CC, deleted drivers, cleaned registery > then reinstaleld to the latest.

The graphics card works fine on norm games (Im playing WarZ) but it doesnt play high end games any more (BLR)

the problem is I often get "AMD Driver device has stopped working and successfully recovered" a LOT now.. even on low end games because it is stressing my card out

The card stays on 32C idle when browsing.. which is probably good. I have over 5 case fans (cheap F12s) powered to a fan controller.. and my computer is very cool now (buying a 212 Evo soon anyway).. I feel a lot of air coming out of the front mesh for some reason.. which is probably good anyway lol

Guys

Should I overclock to my 6970 shaders? I have dual bios

Also anybody got succesfull OC settings for this card? I k a lot of people do .. but I want relatively safe and last 2+ year

Have you made sure the OC isn't applying its self on boot to windows?

What temps while stressing on the build up to BSOD.

Device driver stopped working error suggests too high of a clock speed or too little core voltage.

I don't really know how to unapply the OC..

but anyways I do actually WANT to OC to the 6970 specs as people are saying its safe.

I'm pretty new to GFX cards.. and computers in all... build this beauty a month back (first PC)

I ran UNIGINE HEAVEN and maxed out with 30FPS benchmark which is real ****.. I get 70+ maxed on BLR.. guess heaven's a lot more intensive :P

I don't know how .. but BSOD errors have been fixed, I keep getting device driver has stopped working though.

I'm going to reseat the card (just take off, and put back on right?) and should I switch the shaders to 6970 spec while I'm at it? (i just flick a switch.. no flash for me haha) .. anyway I can monitor temps while 100%ing the GPU?

EDIT; im going to look into this http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticle...TIKMDAGhasstoppedrespondingerrormessages.aspx

Open Trixx, reset clocks and close.

Open CCC also hit reset to defaults, no reboot and stress test again to see if the driver error comes back.

I never get that once stress testing

Only playing games

Also reset it and clocks are 840 and 1325 stable on the stress test thing

Should I increase power limit? Im using MSI afterburning and testing through GPU tool stress test

I'm getting 65+FPS avg.. is that good or bad for my 6950? I want to match/beat the 6970

Also when should I switch to 6970 spec shaders?

EDIT:

Screw that ****

Stress test is stupid as hell

in real life gaming I get device driver has stopped working 24/7.. wow I hate you GPU!

I reset all clocks

Can you help me fix this? It happens to BLR after 5 mins, War Z after 20 mins.. War Z is less intensive by a lot

I purchased a 6950 specifically to soft mod it to 6970. It's worked faultlessly for about 2 yrs, so I would definitely recommend.
As for the errors you're getting I can only guess it's a driver conflict if your temps are all good. You can use GPUZ to log temps if I remember correctly.

Although, several yrs ago my X1900's cruised through any benchmark but were rapidly cooked playing Beyon Good and Evil, reached 102c more than once

Woah man!

No, no no..

I'm getting 60c max with the maxed out after burner settings (I didn't unlock them for safety, maybe later) and 6970 spec shaders when I stress test.

I always thought 60c was bad lol :P

Oh and do you know how to unlock MSI AB? I've tried those two lines of code and they don't work.. it just has core clocks and memory clocks set to 0.

You need the 2 missing dll files google it

Also in 2 of your posts you say you accidentally overclocked, I would advise you not to overclock as you seem to be a bit of a novice.

Are you sure? I've read that it's pretty basic, and the only way for me not to become a novice is to try and learn, and try not to waste hundreds of pounds of hardware in the first place! :P

OK I won't OC my GPU, CPU is .. safer; with a 212 Evo though right?

Hi I'm not trying to deter you from overclocking it's just I can't see how you can accidentally overclock, if you are doing this it could be very dangerous for your card.
So I think you should read up a bit more that's all.

+1 Overclocking isn't so bad vs Overvolting more than the card can handle, still a good idea to read up more before you try though and I would clean all old drivers and start fresh just incase.

I would be gutted if I damaged my Card from not reading up a bit more on it (Good luck)

Try underclocking the card to just below 6950 clocks or below 880mhz if thats what its at ? and see if the same happens sometimes I think some cards barely pass the tests at said clock and voltage try underclocking or increasing voltage it has been known that gpu which is say 800mhz can no longer do 800mhz at the same voltage or wasn't properly stable in the first place at said voltage and clocks.

Also make sure you try other drivers like the 12.10 and 12.11 beta

Not really relative to what you want to know, but as for temps, you shouldn't be feeling a lot of air coming out the front - is the fan mounted the correct way around?

I meant that I had not realised that CCC and Trixx/AB were both OCing as well..

Even though I hit reset and apply.. I dont really think it was my fault though.

@fanguy

How am I meant to mount the fans? I just mounted them all in one direction because I couldn't find any guides on airflow and case cooling, I found liquid cooling but no air.

I think I have fixed the problem though.

I went here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2665946

and selected FIX IT FOR ME.. and some how after the restart .. no problems so far! :)

I'm so happy AMD Display Responding error's have stopped happening. I love you Microsoft! xD

must have been of been a driver/software error (not too clued up myself). I have a 6950 and anything above 900/1350 I got the same message in gaming but the cards default settings were automatically applied afterwards whether I was using overdrive, msi ab or trixx

Hey

I was playing for about 3 hours.. then it came again! On a crucial point xD

Does everybody get this a lot, or daily? Or should I be receiving none of this?
